Sometimes you just want to sit back, relax, and watch Lost in Space or the upcoming NBA season. One of the best media apps to make it happen is called Kodi, and it is wildly popular.  While Kodi itself is just a media player, you can use add-ons to stream media from third-party apps. If you have any concerns about security and privacy when you stream through the Kodi app, there’s good news.

Several VPN providers are well-suited for streaming because they are fast, reliable, and let you connect from multiple devices. With a VPN, you can connect to the server you want and then access the streaming media from anywhere at any time.

#1: IPVanish

With unlimited device connections, IPVanish is a top pick.

We picked IPVanish because it is a top-rated VPN and connects at decent speeds. But we mostly like it because you can use as many gadgets as you want. That’s right, IPVanish doesn’t cap how many devices you can connect to one account. If you use Kodi on your smart television, you can keep watching on a smartphone, tablet, and a few extra laptops.

One of the interesting things about the entire VPN category is that most services only allow you to connect with up to five devices. This is true of even the big-name providers like ExpressVPN and NordVPN.

#2: PureVPN

One of the fastest VPNs we’ve tried that’s also one of the best.

A well-designed and powerful VPN for all online activity, PureVPN also lets you stream at fast speeds even with the added security encryption. You can expect speeds of about 90 Mbps, which is fast enough for 4K movies and shows.

Kodi works with smart televisions for lean-back streaming in your living room but also runs on tablets and phones, so no matter how you connect, you can expect a smooth and steady stream.

#3: VyprVPN

One of the best VPN providers for security is also a good match for Kodi.

For anyone looking to make sure they’re streaming their media streaming through secure connections, VyprVPN is a top client for security.

At 60 Mbps, it is also fast enough to keep up with your 4K streaming through the Kodi player, whether that’s to the smart television running Google Android TV or a laptop, smartphone, or tablet.

Why do you need a VPN with Kodi?

Kodi itself is just a media player. You don’t need a VPN to use it, especially if you import your own media files from a local source. But Kodi does allow you to use add-ons to stream media from third-party providers, and we would recommend grabbing a VPN service if you want to use this feature.

For starters, it’s always a good idea to connect to the internet through a VPN to keep your personal info and web history private, especially if those banner ads related to your recent browsing history for new baby clothes make you uncomfortable.

But you’re also going to want a secure connection when tapping into third-party add-ons to protect your info and your devices from malware or hackers. Kodi does its best to make sure the add-ons are safe and legal, but it’s better to be safe than sorry anytime you’re on the internet.

Keep in mind that we recommend using a VPN service to keep you safe on the internet. Neither VPNs nor Kodi should be used for obtaining copyrighted media for free. Piracy is still illegal, folks.

How a VPN helps

With a VPN, you are adding encryption to your connection—typically at a slight hit in overall bandwidth—but the benefit is your own privacy and anonymity. You can stream with add-ons through Kodi and trust that no one can see which movies and shows you are watching.

(The only caveat here is if there is a court order to see any available logs from your VPN. So keep your internet use above the table, and you won’t have to worry about this.)

Other perks

A VPN service also allows you to access servers in other locations. Users have found they can connect to a server in the UK, for example, sign up for the BBC network, and stream shows as though they are living there.

There are nefarious purposes for this feature—which we still don’t condone—but there are also perfectly legitimate reasons to switch servers and stream away.

Recap: Best VPNs for Kodi

Media streaming doesn’t have to reveal your own preferences and tastes, even if they are perfectly legitimate. The top VPN clients protect your online activity and keep you safe from any malicious add-ons you might accidentally come across.

  • IPVanish doesn’t boast the fastest speeds on our list, but it’s fast enough for streaming, and you can’t beat it’s unlimited device connections.
  • PureVPN is a solid VPN provider all around, and with its fast speeds, you’ll have clear 4K movies playing in no time.
  • VyprVPN is a highly secure VPN that will protect all of your Kodi streams, all while maintaining a good speed.
