Verizon is the second-fastest internet provider in the U.S., according to results collected from Reviews.org’s speed test. Between data from its fiber service, Verizon Fios, and its 5G service, Verizon 5G Home Internet, its average download speed is 250.84Mbps.

While Verizon’s tested speeds fall slightly under its advertised download minimum of 300Mbps, many customers get faster speeds than that. And you have to allow room for human error—a lot of people don’t know how to maximize their internet services, which in many cases means plugging a device directly into the router.

All of Verizon’s fastest cities except Fisherville are suburbs of massive metropolises (New York, Baltimore, and Boston). And unsurprisingly, they’re all clustered on the East Coast, where most of Verizon’s internet coverage is.

Verizon speeds aren’t this fast everywhere its fiber and 5G services are available, but you should get a good clip wherever you are. After all, Verizon’s average internet speed is 250Mbps. That’s 2.5 times the minimum for high-speed internet.

In most cases, 300Mbps is the best internet speed to get from either Verizon Fios or Verizon 5G Home Internet. It’s an excellent speed for most household internet needs.

While 300Mbps isn’t the fastest internet option, it’s quick enough to download the entire five-hour BBC Pride and Prejudice in under three minutes. In other words, you should be able to stream, game, and surf at this speed without issue.

I recommend the Fios 300Mbps plan or the 5G Home plan. The two plans are roughly the same price ($49.99 vs. $50.00) and speed (300Mbps). Just know that you get a faster upload speed with Verizon Fios, which is good to have if you create a lot of digital media but perhaps unnecessary if you don’t.

Verizon Fios plans go up to 2,300Mbps. Most people don’t need anything remotely close to that—typically, an internet connection can comfortably manage several people and all their devices on 300–500Mbps.
