How to score cheap movie tickets in Australia
Every discount movie ticket deal and perk available in Australia.
We’ve all been there. All you wanted was to switch off, kick back and have some cheaps laughs with Hobbs and Shaw. But why settle for a medium popcorn and soft drink combo when a large is just a few bucks more? And what kind of cinema experience is complete without a choc-top? Before you know it, you’ve racked up a wallet-busting bill that’s about enough to put you into intensive Mi Goreng care until next payday. Don’t get us started on LUX or Gold Class.
With on-demand streaming sites and services like Netflix taking over as the primary way people watch movies and TV, cinema-going culture has taken a dive. The movie ticket price gouge of the mid-naughts didn’t help, and while prices remain high today, a trip to the flicks doesn’t have to be so expensive. There are plenty of ways you can score cheap movie tickets in Australia, in fact you might be missing out on awesome discounts already.
Let’s start with telcos. If you’ve got a mobile phone plan, chances are you’re signed up with one of the two biggest mobile providers in Australia, Optus and Telstra, both of which offer movie ticket perks. If you regular at Hoyts, Optus is your go-to. If you main Event Cinemas, Telstra will hook you up with decent discounts on tickets, popcorn and drinks.
Optus Movie Tickets: Hoyts and Hoyts LUX
One way franchise cinemas are luring moviegoers back to cinemas is with premium viewing experiences, like Hoyts LUX and Event Gold Class. LUX offers private reclining seating, a restaurant-quality food menu, cold beverages (including booze), complimentary popcorn and soft drink, plus waiters on-hand to deliver it all.
What better way to spend up to three hours on your tush?
The problem is, it’s pricey. Usually, LUX tickets will cost you $42 a pop. Happily, Optus customers will only pay $27 per ticket, which is roughly 35% off. Consider the fact that you also get a complimentary popcorn and drink combo (which will cost you around $15 alone), it works out to be bloody good value.
Standard tickets are discounted too. Normally you pay around $21 for a standard Hoyts ticket but Optus customers can pick them up at $12.50 a pop.
- Hoyts Standard Ticket: $12.50 (usually $21.00)
- Hoyts LUX Ticket: $27.00 (usually $42.00)
How do I redeem my Optus Perks Hoyts discount?
If you’re already an Optus customer, head over to the telco’s website and enter your My Account login details (username and password tied to your monthly bill). Then head over to the Perks section of the site and click the “Book Now” button. This will redirect you to the Hoyts website where you can select your movie and session time. When you hit the checkout, your discount will be applied automatically.
It’s worth mentioning that Hoyts only reserves a set number of tickets per session for Optus customers so if you want to nab that discount, it’s worth booking well ahead of time.
If you’re not already an Optus customer, cheap as chips movie tickets might be reason enough to switch over. Here’s a selection of the most popular Optus mobile plans according to WhistleOut’s comparison engine.

- Event standard: $12.50 per ticket
- Event 3D session: $15.50 per ticket

If it is, you will be asked to log in using your Telstra Plus account details. Once logged in, you can purchase your tickets through Telstra’s account management portal.
