If you think vacuum you probably think Dyson, but there are so many other manufacturers out there vying to make the best stick vacuum. According to our testing, some of them are in fact succeeding.
Cordless vacuums have become immensley popular in Australia, and why wouldn't they. They're easier to move than barrel vacuums, lighter, don't need cords, and most don't need dustbags. Plus they take up way less space which is absolutely crucial as more and more of us take up apartment living. With this surge in popularity came more and more options. Honestly, it can be overwhelming, but we're here to help.
In this guide we take a look at the best stick vacuum cleaners in Australia. Every vacuum featured is one we have reviewed, tested, and rated- the TLDR: we wouldn't recommend something we wouldn't buy ourselves.

How we pick the best stick vacuums
Price
Our scoring system takes the outright price of stick vacuums into account. The lower the price, the better the score. Since cheap vacuums have trade-offs, this isn't weighted as heavily as other categories however
Design
Design is crucial to the usibility of home technology. For vacuums we look at the weight, the usefulness of attachments, the bin size, and how easy it is to clean the device.
Performance
We compare the both specs and practical performance across small, medium, and large debris. Testing also takes into account battery life and particle filtration.
Expert testing
Every stick vacuum we rank is reviewed by our experts. Our reviewers test things like the usefulnes of attachments, reliability, actual battery life, and the overall user experience.
Best of the best stick vacuum cleaners
- Self-emptying base station is a game changer
- Adjustable height
- Attachments (especially pet fur one) work well
- Pricey
- Mop attachment isn't worth it
Samsung took a bunch of vacuuming's pain points and made them less painful with the Bespoke Jet. Equipped with a free-standing docking and auto-empty station, you will rarely need to poke a chopstick in the chamber to empty it out properly. Smart clog detection gives on-device prompts as to where a clog is to stop you needing to search around in every nook and cranny of the stick vacuum to find the source of the problem. Plus, it mops!
Not only did the Samsung Jet score the highest in performance, but it has a huge amount of included attachments, a hefty dustbin, and a solid build to it. Nothing on this device feels flimsy, but it weighs in at just 2.7kg making it easy to use for extended periods of time.
While $1,299 is a high price to pay for a vacuum cleaner, it is cheaper than a lot of Dyson products, and in our testing the Samsung Bespoke Jet is the most thoughtful and practical stick vacuum available in Australia.
Alternatives
Psst! There is a newer version of the Samsung Bespoke Jet called Bespoke Jet Plus Pro and the Plus Elite. The original Jet is excellent but because it is a bit older, stock is limited (but on the plus side what is left is cheaper).
We get that it might be dissapointing if you can't find one, so you might want to check out the Samsung Jet Plus Pro instead; here are a couple of places to get one.
How our experts test and score stick vacuums
We test how well the vacuum is able to remove medium debris (dry oats), and small debris (fine salt) from both hard floors and carpetted spaced. This is recorded as a clearance rate in percentage points.
We test the same particles but up against the edge of a wall. We run the vacuum along the space and document what percentage of debris is removed using the main brush head.
We gauge how useful the extra attachments are to the cleaning process. We test each attachment against its intended purpose (upholstery cleaners against couches, crevice tools in small corners, etc), and rate how well these operate. The total score takes each provided attachment into account.
We pride ourselves on using real-world testing so consumers know what to expect in their homes. The use experience documents aspects such as the reliability of the device (does it jam), how the battery life specs stack up in real life, and how easy the stick vacuum is to use.
Next best stick vacuum
- Auto-empty station!
- Best upholstery cleaning we've tested
- Different vacuum heads for carpet and hard floor
- Doesn't work as well on carpet
- Not very ergonomic
Dreame's Z10 stick vacuum takes a lot of what we love about the Samsung Bespoke Jet and makes it more affordable. Kitted out with a bunch of useful accessories and an auto-empty dock, even at its full price this is a bargain for what you get.
Across both hard floor and carpet this stick vac pulls up 95% of debris, although it isn't quite powerful enough to pull anything from deep within your carpets. For surface level cleaning, it will definitely do the trick, and it thrives on hard floors using the microfibre roller. There aren't as many attachments, but the ones it does come with are useful. Apart from a crevice tool, and heads for both carpet and hard floors, the Z10 has the best upholstery cleaner we have used. Rather than getting tangled up in the fabric, this mini motorised head was able to grip at spindly furs stuck in my mattress. 10/10 - no notes on that part.
Perhaps the best part of all is the auto-empty base station. Not only does this add renter-friendly storage for the stick vac, but it means you don't have to deal with the dustbin making it an excellent option for asthma and allergy sufferers.
Best Dyson stick vacuum
- Detect laser shows ALL the dust
- Lots of great attachments
- Lightweight design makes it easy to use
- Small chamber tends to get clogged easily
- Difficult to clean
Dyson's V12 Detect Slim is a lightweight stick vacuum which performs well but won't be the right call for everyone. This model comes with a green LED laser light that unearths more dust and dirt than you could imagine on your floors. It is a nifty feature but only available on the microfibre roller used for hard flooring. If you're rocking carpet then it will unfortunately go to waste.
It's lightweight form means the V12 Detect is easy to manouever but it also means a couple of trade-offs to keep it that way. The slim design results in the vacuum tube being easy to clog and difficult to clean, plus the dustbin is very small at just 0.35L. For pet owners in particular this Dyson vacuum probably won't cut it.
In saying that, if you've got a relatively small space, with predominantley hard flooring, and don't have excessive amounts of fur to deal with, the V12 Detect makes for a satisfying and sleek cleaning machine. Even better if you can get a good deal on it.
Alternatives
Want a Dyson, but just not THIS Dyson stick vacuum? No worries. If you want the same laser detection we would recommend the Gen5 Detect Complete. It is more expensive, but all around more powerful. If you'd rather something cheaper the Cyclone V10 has comparable specs, but less fancy tech, for about $250 less.
