Our relationships with telcos

We have commercial agreements with some providers in our database. When you click a 'Go to Site' button, we receive a small payment from that brand – this is how we can afford to keep comparing internet and mobile plans. But we still compare and highlight plans we receive no payments for because we believe this helps you find one that best suits your needs.

NBN 100 is the most popular form of fixed-line internet in Australia and it's easy to see why. The asking price is a lot more approachable than the likes of NBN 250 and NBN 1000, but the performance is still  fast enough for the average household.

So which NBN 100 plans are the best? The answer depends on your needs, but we've saved you some trouble with this round-up of the NBN 100 plans from various providers, comparing your options by value, price and performance.

Best NBN 100 plan

SpinTel NBN Unlimited Premium 100

Our pick this month for the best NBN 100 plan in Australia comes from SpinTel. Priced at a competitive $86.95 per month (plus a $16.95/mth discount for the first six months), the SpinTel NBN Unlimited Plan offers 100Mbps in self-reported typical evening download speeds and 18Mbps in upload speeds.

While self-reported speeds are usually a good indicator, it's worth noting SpinTel isn't included in the the ACCC's performance reports, which is a third-party program that records real-world speeds of most of the major providers.

Still, for $70 per month for the first six months and $86.95 per month thereafter, that's worth taking a punt on. After all, SpinTel has no lock-in contracts, so it's a low-risk trial and you can swap to another provider before the deal is done if you want to grab another intro discount from elsewhere.

Plan details

  • Discounted Price: $70 per month
  • Ongoing Price: $86.90 per month
  • Cost for the first year: $941.76  over the first 12 months
  • Ongoing yearly cost: $1043.40 per year thereafter
pro
Reasons to buy
  • Great promo pricing
  • Great ongoing pricing
  • 100Mbps download speeds
con
Reasons to avoid
  • Not an ACCC-tracked provider
  • Not the fastest upload speeds (but not bad, either)

How we choose the best NBN 100 plans

We track the prices and typical evening speeds attached to NBN 100 plans from among the over 30 internet providers in our database. When it comes time to make our monthly pick for the best NBN 100 plans, we favour plans with the lowest price, unlimited data, no contract, and a minimum of 100Mbps for typical evening download speeds. NBN 100/40 plans don't tend to take top spot in this ranking, but we've given them their own section below.

Our comparison of the best 100Mbps NBN plans also highlights introductory deals because changing providers regularly is the surest way to save money on your monthly NBN bill, thanks to a lack of contracts and the prevalence of intro discounts.

It's worth nothing the cost of plans tend to change every July, which can make longer term predictions less reliable. Even so, we still include annual pricing in our comparisons because hopping between providers a couple of times per year isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Cheap NBN 100 plans

Usually, the main things you lose by signing up to a cheap NBN 100 plan over a more-expensive one are extra perks or a robust customer support service. The speed performance difference between a cheap and premium NBN 100 plan usually comes down to upload speeds, though even here it's a matter of 3Mbps at most for the standard NBN 100/20 plans. And if uploads are important enough that 3Mbps matters to you, consider paying a bit more for an NBN 100/40 plan with double the max uploads.

As for pricing, most NBN 100 providers will offer your first handful of months at a discount before bumping you up to the regular price. If you stick with the same provider for too long, you might end up paying for it. But contracts are few and far between, so you can change often to keep the savings rolling in.

Lastly, it's good to investigate what kind of bundles, discounts and NBN modems each provider offers. Some NBN providers offer strictly BYO (Bring-Your-Own) modem plans, while others supply one for a once-off fee. But a select few will allow you to bundle a modem (or mobile phone) with your NBN plan, allowing you to pay your hardware costs over a set period of time.

Cheapest intro pricing

Plan details

  • Discounted Price: $60 per month for first six months
  • Ongoing Price: $90 per month
  • Cost for the first year: $900 over the first 12 months
  • Ongoing yearly cost: $1080 per year thereafter
pro
Reasons to buy
  • Great promo pricing
  • 1-month money back guarantee
  • Bundle and Save
  • 19Mbps upload speeds
con
Reasons to avoid
  • Ongoing pricing is steep
  • 97Mbps typical evening speeds (not the fastest reported, but only by a little).
  • Not an ACCC-tracked provider

The cheapest NBN 100 plan in our database right now is the Mate No Worries nbn 100/20 plan. It offers 97Mbps in self-reported typical evening download speeds and 17Mbps in upload speeds. Now, 97Mbps isn't the 100Mbps of some other plans' reported speeds, but 3Mbps isn't a huge gap.

New customers can also save $30 per month for the first six months if they sign up before the end of May 2025 and use the code MATE30 at checkout. That discount knocks the intro price down to $60 per month.

Cheapest long term pricing

While jumping between intro discounts will save you money, that might not be what you're after. If you're keen to set, forget and save some money, opting for an NBN 100 plan with cheaper standard pricing might make more sense than one with intro discounts that expire after a few months. Below, we've compared plans based on their total cost over the first 12 months after signing up.

Plan details

  • Discounted Price: $65 per month
  • Ongoing Price: $89 per month
  • Cost for the first year: $780 over the first 12 months
  • Ongoing yearly cost: $1068 per year thereafter
pro
Reasons to buy
  • Good ongoing pricing
  • Six-month intro discount
  • 100Mbps download speeds
  • 19Mbps upload speeds
con
Reasons to avoid
  • Not an ACCC-tracked provider

Southern Phone currently has the cheapest NBN 100 plan in our database over the first 12 months after signing up, and its ongoing yearly price is also quite low.

New customers get $24 off for the first twelve months, after which the ongoing price is $89.95. The telco also reports good typical evening speeds – 100Mbps downloads and 19Mbps up, the latter of which is only 1Mbps below the maximum for this plan. There's also no contract or set up fee, so you can easily change providers if it doesn't end up being for you.

Best NBN 100/40 plans

Exetel Power Home nbn100/40

Those who work from home, make regular use of cloud storage, use video conferencing, or spend a lot of time playing games online may chafe on the 20Mbps upload speeds offered by regular NBN 100 plans. Fortunately, a select few providers offer a version of NBN 100 with faster upload speeds of up to 40Mbps upload speeds, called NBN 100/40 plans.

Exetel is one of those providers and its Power Home NBN plan reports typical evening download speeds of 100Mbps and 34Mbps upload speeds (plus low latency, according the ACCC's speed test results). Some of these uses also benefit from having low latency, so we've included that when considering our current NBN 100/40 pick.

Plan details

  • Discounted Price: $85 per month
  • Ongoing Price: $99 per month
  • Cost for the first year: $1,104  over the first 12 months
  • Ongoing yearly cost: $1,188 per year thereafter
pro
Reasons to buy
  • 34Mbps typical evening upload speeds
  • 100Mbps typical evening download speeds
  • ACCC tracked
  • Lowest latency in the ACCC's latest report
con
Reasons to avoid
  • $99.90 per month after first six months (good for NBN 100/40, but expensive compared to regular NBN 100/20 plans)

Exetel might be our favorite for now, but it's hardly the only game in town. Check out the widget below for a shortlist of NBN 100 providers that offer a 40Mbps upload speeds as an option, ordered by their popularity with our visitors over the last seven days.

What are typical evening speeds?

Why we use typical evening speeds to compare NBN 100 plans

Typical evening speeds and pricing are our preferred metrics when it comes to choosing the best NBN 100 plans. Pricing can include intro discounts or long-term spend, depending on which is more of a stand-out feature in the market at the time.

Typical evening speeds refer to the average speeds that a given NBN plan offers during periods of peak usage. The ACCC requires NBN fixed-line providers to self-report typical evening download speeds – in part following ACCC guidelines – so they're good for getting a sense of how your internet speed may be affected during the parts of the day when you (and everyone else) are most likely to be using it. But they're not a guarantee and your connection may differ based on a number of factors, including your NBN connection technology and location.

Is 100Mbps fast?

If you sign up for an NBN 100 plan in Australia, the best you're going to get from most providers when it comes to speed is 100Mbps. If you're not too technically-minded, it can be hard to put that number in context. For most Aussies, the easiest way to find out if 100Mbps is fast enough for your needs it to sign up and find out. But we can also give you some quick pointers.

A quick look at the official Netflix internet requirements might help push you one direction or another. Streaming video content in 4K requires a minimum of 15Mbps. If your household has multiple people looking to stream to their screen of choice then that bandwidth may feel stretched sooner rather than later. The same goes if anyone regularly downloads large files (such as video game updates).

100Mbps is fast enough for everyday usage but those who require faster downloads, lower latency or a bigger bandwidth budget for streaming may want to consider an NBN 250 or NBN 1000 plan instead.

NBN 100 FAQs

These are the most frequently asked questions about fast NBN.
Can I get faster NBN at my home?

If a fixed-line NBN connection is available at your house (as in all NBN except Wireless and Satellite) then you should be eligible to apply for an NBN 100 plan.

The goal of the NBN is to make all service available to a majority of homes and businesses. However, because of technical limitations some internet providers have opted to not advertise higher speed NBN plans and ask customers to wait until after they are connect to an NBN 100 plan before they can test the speed of their connection.

If it is a strong connection then the provider will upgrade your service. If you're on an older connection then you might be eligible for a free upgrade to FTTP. According to NBN Co, over 2.5 million FTTN addresses are already eligible for a free FTTP upgrade.

Even so, there are some cases (e.g. location and distance from the node) where NBN 100 won't be available at your address. At that point, you might be investigating a fast NBN alternative like home wireless or 5G home broadband.

What speed is NBN 100?

While the exact performance may vary between providers and when you're looking to make use of your connection, all NBN 100 plans are able to offer download speeds of as high as 100Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10Mbps.

What's the difference between NBN 50 and NBN 100?

The biggest difference between NBN 50 and NBN 100 is speed. While NBN 50 plans are capable of maximum download speeds of as much as 50Mbps, NBN 100 plans are capable of double that at 100Mbps.

How much is the NBN 100 plan?

In Australia, the price of NBN is always changing and will depend on not just your choice in provider but also how long you've been with them. Right now, the promotional price (in other words, the price you pay when you sign up as a new customer) of NBN 100 is closer to $65 per month while the ongoing price is higher at $80 per month.
