Robot vacuum cleaners have been around for over 20 years now, which is quite frankly crazy to think about. In that time the little robots have made huge advancements; lidar navigation and mapping, auto-empty stations, self-cleaning mops, even humidity linked settings, and most recently robot arms that can pick up after you.

In a mature market it is harder to pick out the best robot vacuum cleaner, unless you've tested a bunch of them. Thats where we step in. I personally review at least one robovac each month, and the extended team clocked in 17 in 2024 alone. Our testing is consistent, looking at elements like particle efficiency, battery life, smart navigation, and reliability.

Weighing these against the price, we score and rank every vacuum to help find the best robot vacuum cleaner available in Australia.

How we pick the best robot vacuum cleaners

Price Tag

Price

Robot vacuums are becoming high ticket items, so we look at the value proposition that higher price point gives you. If there is similar performance at something half the price, then we will be sure to let you know.

Bullhorn

Design

Design takes in to account the size and capacity of the dustbin and the base station plus its functionality. We also look at the roller design taking in to account how well features like "zero tangle" rollers live up to their claims.

Info Box

Performance

We compare the practical particle performance of every robot vacuum. Our scores are based on how well they clean up small and medium debris, and how well the mop handles wet, dry, and sticky messes. Our testing also looks at object avoidance, navigation, and threshold clearance.

Light Bulb

Expert testing

Every robot vacuum cleaner we rank is reviewed by our experts. In a controlled environment, we test things like; particle performance, mop and edge performance, the app accuracy and usefulness, and device reliability.

Best of the best robot vacuum cleaner in Australia

Roborock Qrevo Curv: Intelligent, effective, and ahead of the game
"At a consumer level, the Curv sets a new standard other robot vacuums will need to live up to." Anula Wiwatowska

pro
Reasons to buy
  • Anti-tangle roller is an improvement
  • Cheaper compared to other premium releases
  • Super quiet
con
Reasons to avoid
  • Edge cleaning on carpet could improve
  • Threshold clearance is loud and bouncy

Roborock has taken much of the same technology we see in comparably priced robot vacuums, but made improved upon them with the Qrevo Curv. Its Zero-Tangle DuoDivide roller actually stops hair tangles, the edge cleaning is effective not only on flat walls but nudges up against any object in the space, and the object avoidance is near perfect. The Qrevo Curv is the best overall user experience we've seen in a robot vacuum.

Apart from its smarts, the Qrevo Curv has an excellent clearance rate of 99% for small and medium debris on hardwood and carpet. Its only downfall is picking up dander against walls on carpet where it slips down to a 93%, but for the most part it does a great job.

This robot vacuum is also one of the quietest we've tested, even back at the all-in-one base station. The only feature we aren't sold on is the 4cm threshold clearance. From a tech perspective it is awesome that it can climb stairs (kind of), but practically we didn't find much use for it.

Ecovacs Deebot X5 Pro Omni: The robots are ready to take over
"Today’s robovacs are to yesterday’s robovacs what the iPhone 16 is to the Nokia 1100... The Ecovacs Deebot X5 Pro Omni is the culmination of all those leaps in technology—a cleaning device that I can actually trust to do just as good a job as myself." Georgia Dixon

Reasons to buy
  • Excellent navigation
  • Less hair tangles on the rollers
  • Mopping is actually effective
con
Reasons to avoid
  • Very expensive
  • Extendable mop arm is smaller than other devices

Ecovacs is among the largest robot vacuum cleaner brands in the country, so it make sense that their devices feature on best-of lists across the net. The latest flagship, the X5 Pro Omni is the creme-de-la-creme of robot vacuums, kitted out with self emptying, self cleaning mops, excellent obstacle avoidance, and edge mopping.

We found that the X5 picked up 95% of debris during testing, across all kinds of floor types. Its mopping is a huge step up from most robot vacuums, in part thanks to its reliable mop cleaning throughout the process. Rather than wait until the very end, the X5 will return to the dock and clean its mop pads after every room to make sure you don't spread dirty mop water around.

Object detection and avoidance are crucial for automous robot vacuums, and the Pro Omni does a stellar job. Whether its consistent obstacles like chairs, or last minute ones like a curious puppy, our testing showed the device was able to pivot reliably and effectively.

Ecovacs' X5 Pro Omni will handle pretty much anything you throw at it.

Reasons to buy
  • Total bargain
  • Relatively reliable navigation and mapping
con
Reasons to avoid
  • Set up is rough
  • Leaky mopping
  • No auto-lift on carpets

Ecovacs and Aldi have a long standing partnership offering up cheap robot vacuum cleaners at very limited quantities. On March 5th the budget retailer is selling the Deebot Neo 2.0 for just $349 which is quite frankly one of the best robot vacuum cleaner deals in the country.

We reviewed the Neo 2.0 Plus which is the Neo 2.0 but with an auto empty station. While the auto empty station isn't included in the price, the vacuum itself is quite reliable for the price point. You won't get many bells and whistles for this deal, but you will get something you can confidently let roam free and do some basic day-to-day cleaning.

Stock is incredibly limited however, so if you can't snag this deal there are some other cheap robot vacuum picks below that could be worth considering instead.

Best robot vacuum and mop in Australia

Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni: Mopping pro
x8 pro omni
4.3 out of 5 stars
4.25
RRP$2,499
"I can confidently dub the X8 Pro Omni the best mopping robot on the Australian market, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the overall user experience will live up to that." Anula Wiwatowska
Home and Lifestyle Tech Editor
pro
Reasons to buy
  • Near perfect mopping performance
  • First automatic detergent dispenser on Ecovacs product
  • Roller mop makes for less tangled cables
con
Reasons to avoid
  • Carpet performance really suffers
  • Intelligence is not reliable

According to our testing the latest Ecovacs release, the X8 Pro Omni has the best mopping available on a robot vacuum cleaner. It utilises a telescopic roller mop which cleans itself as it goes. This means a dirty mop never actually touches the ground so the floor is able to actually get clean rather than just pushing the muck around.

In our testing the device cleaned up more than 99% of dry, wet, and sticky messes on hardwood floor. Even up against edges. This is the best result we have seen in any of the robot vacuums we have tested, which is unsurprising considering the technology comes from Tineco (our favourite hard floor cleaners). You can also use Ecovacs approved cleaning solution to up that mopping experience even further.

Admittedly the carpet performance isn't as good on this robovac, and the intelligence is a bit behind our best robot vacuum pick. The X8 Pro Omni may need a bit of a helping hand to get set up, so if you're willing to put in the effort you'll be rewarded with sparkly clean hard floors.
