This Is the Way to Watch The Mandalorian Season 2 in Style

A trilogy of gear upgrades perfectly suited to the best Star Wars TV show ever

The Mandalorian season 2 debuts October 30 on Disney+, and it’s time to prepare.

If you want to watch the best Star Wars television show ever made in imperial style, these are the gear recommendations you’re looking for.

We should state up front that this is something of a luxe approach. We know not everyone’s looking to do this all at once–it’s sort of an aspirational guide, kind of like how Mando can upgrade his armor as he goes along. Maybe you’re looking for the full suit, maybe you can afford only a gauntlet or chestplate right now.

In either case, this is the way to watch The Mandalorian season 2 in style.

So let’s dig in!

The adventure begins … by signing up for Disney+

To enter the Star Wars streaming universe, you’ll need the Disney+ app and a current account

You might be as reluctant to sign up for yet another streaming service as Luke Skywalker is to do, well, just about anything. But Disney+ is worth it. Check out our full Disney+ review if you want to read more about everything it offers.

We’d sign up just for The Mandalorian season 2. Disney has apparently put even more financial resources into the show. The trailer alone shows some fantastic new CGI that ups the ante as far as television science-fiction shows. In between episodes, you can catch up on other Star Wars shows and Marvel movies.

We’ll make it easy–just follow this link to sign up for Disney+ (or get your R2 unit to do it for you).

Now that you have Disney+, let’s move on to the fun stuff.

This Samsung 4K television is fully armed and operational with Disney+

One of the best 4K televisions around has the Disney+ app built in

With Star Wars, it all starts with what you see. The QLED tech in the Samsung Q70T smart television is amazingly detailed, rich, and vibrant–such that you might think the Mandalorian really is sitting on a rock on an alien planet tending to Baby Yoda and cleaning his blaster.

Sharpness in smart TVs is one thing, but Samsung’s QLED line has a vibrancy that stands out compared to models by lesser brands. It’s partly the fact that the brightness is so vivid, and it’s partly due to the one thing that seems to matter most in all smart televisions:

Is the processor fast enough?

Fast processor for the Disney+ app

Let’s be clear about one thing: budget-minded smart televisions are often annoyingly slow when it comes to apps. And the apps tend to crash because of memory issues. And did we mention the picture quality is subpar because the processor can’t keep up?

The Samsung 65-inch Class QLED Q70T smart TV has a fast processor that makes sure all apps load quickly and reliably. What this means is you won’t have to worry if the Disney+ app will load slowly when you first sit down with the popcorn, and won’t get hung up right in the middle of the action.

The Sonos Arc soundbar is impressive, most impressive

The pros at Skywalker Sound deserve to have their work heard on emperor-class gear

You want massive sound for anything Star Wars-related. This is the first true surround-sound system I’ve seen from Sonos, and it delivers. In the past, Sonos made a standalone soundbar and individual speakers, but the Arc ties it all together for epic audio and fully immersive explosions, laser blasts, and Baby Yoda hiccups.

One of the coolest experiences in any home theater during a really excellent show with crisp audio (read: The Mandalorian) is you might do a double take and think a ship is flying in behind you or a blast emanating from across the room. The Sonos Arc soundbar replicates 3D audio with authentic clarity.

Less hum

One of the most annoying things about some surround-sound systems and even individual soundbars is that you can hear a low-level hum, distortion, or buzzing at times. Whenever I hear it, I make a face like an Ugnaught.

This hum is caused partly by interference over wireless or wired connections to the speakers, the AV receiver you use, or some other noise-producing problem in your house wiring. In some cases, there’s a hum or distortion that comes from rattling or other issues with the speaker cabinets.

The Sonos Arc’s drivers are unique in that they produce far less hum than the typical soundbar’s, making the Arc ideal for those moments when you really need to listen to the details. If you want the real “wretched hive of scum and villainy” experience, you need to hear all the scrappy dialogue and the cantina band in full surround sound and with no obnoxious hum.

The Force is strong with this mesh Wi-Fi router

So let’s say you splurge on that Samsung 65-inch smart television and the Sonos surround-sound setup I recommended. You’re all set for the second season on October 30, right?

Well, the bad news is a poor wireless signal can take even the best shows on the most amazing television with the most brilliant audio and dump it all right in a Dagobah swamp of buffering, low-quality video, and dropped signals.

I use this Google Nest WiFi Router 2 because I hate to see any buffering–ever. I want to extinguish buffering from the universe like the Sith want to exterminate the Jedi, and this Google Nest mesh system keeps the wireless internet flowing throughout my house with imperial consistency.

The Google Nest bundle includes two devices to extend the signal. It’s nice knowing you can always add more to improve signal strength in a corner office or even outside on the patio. Mesh networking is the way to go if you need to maintain a consistent signal for your own viewing and the kids in another room playing video games.

Remember, even the Death Star needed a range extender of sorts on the moon of Endor.

The Xfinity Internet Blast! Pro Plus gives you 300 Mbps download speeds. It’s a good value because of the extreme speed. Plus, it’s a good match for a streaming app like Disney+. In our hands-on tests using the app on a smart television with the aforementioned Google Nest mesh routers plugged into this ISP, we never had any buffering or pausing testing season 1 of The Mandalorian.

Xfinity includes a free hotspot in their modem, which is a handy perk for those who have not upgraded to a router of their own yet. With Xfinity’s modem, you might not need a range-extending mesh network if you live in a smaller house or apartment. If your 4K TV is sitting right next to the modem from Xfinity, chances are you won’t need a router at all.
