T-Mobile runs lots of promotions during the back-to-school season, but these are the top four I'd point a parent toward first.

Add a line to your existing T-Mobile account, and you can get a 5G smartphone with up to $300.99 covered through bill credits. You can do this for up to 12 devices per account. Device options include the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G, the moto g - 2026, or a basic flip phone if you only want calling and texting for a younger kid.

Best for: A child's first phone or phones for several kids in one go.

Eligibility: For T-Mobile customers on plans that cost $60 per month or higher with AutoPay, plus taxes and fees.

Fine print: The cost of the phone, up to $300.99, is covered via 24 or 36 monthly bill credits for well-qualified customers (depending on finance agreement). At checkout, you'll pay tax on the pre-credit price plus a $35 device connection charge. There's no trade-in needed.

Switch to a T-Mobile Experience More 2.0 or Experience Beyond 2.0 plan, bring your existing number, and you can get an iPhone 17 with the cost covered through bill credits. There is no trade-in required.

Best for: This is the pick if you’re already thinking about leaving your current carrier and want a shiny new phone out of the deal. My sneaky tip is that the new phone doesn't have to go to your teenager. You could keep the iPhone 17 for yourself and hand your current phone down to your kid, which is often more than enough for a first device.

If you're not a student, here's what regular T-Mobile plans cost. The per-line price drops sharply once you split a plan across a family — a big reason a four-line family plan is usually the better value than everyone paying for their own.

T-Mobile offers three main unlimited plans for multi-line accounts:

T-Mobile Essentials 2.0

This plan covers the basics: unlimited talk, text, and 50GB of premium data. This plan is best suited for younger kids or middle schoolers who mostly stay connected at home or don’t use their phones during the day. (There's also a cheaper Essentials Saver 2.0 plan, but it's only available for single-line accounts, so it's not a fit if you're adding a kid to your plan.)

T-Mobile Experience More 2.0

This plan offers unlimited premium data, 60GB of high-speed hotspot data, international data roaming, and Netflix Standard with ads. This plan is suitable for a teenager who's more independent and needs reliable data on the go.

T-Mobile Experience Beyond 2.0

This plan offers unlimited premium data, unlimited hotspot data, T-Satellite, international data roaming, Netflix Standard with ads, and Hulu. This plan is best suited for a college student or a family who wants zero data worries throughout the school year.
