Arlo Pro 3 vs. Arlo Pro 4 Cameras 2022
The Arlo Pro 3 and Arlo Pro 4 are extremely similar security cameras, with only two small differences between them
The Arlo Pro 4 is a newer version of the Arlo Pro 3 security camera. But even though it’s the latest model, the Arlo Pro 4 is almost exactly the same as the Arlo Pro 3. There are only two differences between these cameras:
- Price. The Arlo Pro 4 is more expensive than the Arlo Pro 3.
- SmartHub. The Arlo Pro 3 requires the Arlo SmartHub to function, whereas the Arlo Pro 4 does not.
Both the Arlo Pro 3 and the Arlo Pro 4 are great outdoor security cameras. They have advanced features like smart alerts and 2K video recording, and they both come with built-in spotlights for better night vision. We like both of these security cameras equally, and you should buy whichever one you can find at the cheapest price.
Arlo Pro 3 pros and cons
- Built-in siren and spotlight
- High-quality 2K resolution
- Smart alerts and object detection
- Requires hub
- Requires Arlo Smart subscription for full features
Arlo Pro 4 pros and cons
- Does not require hub
- Same features as Arlo Pro 3
- More expensive than the Pro 3
- Requires Arlo Smart subscription for full features
Arlo Pro 3 vs. Arlo Pro 4: Price
Despite being nearly identical cameras, the Arlo Pro 3 and Arlo Pro 4 cameras don’t cost the same. Because the Arlo Pro 4 is a newer model, it costs more than the Pro 3. The Arlo Pro 3 is still cheaper even though you have to buy the Arlo SmartHub along with it.

Arlo Pro 3 pricing
The Pro 3 is currently available only in two- and three-camera kits that come with the required SmartHub.
If you want only a single Arlo Pro 3 camera, then you’ll have to buy the SmartHub separately. And we promise you don’t want to do that. It will cost more to buy the hub separately than to just spring for the two-camera kit.

If you already have an Arlo SmartHub, then buying a single Arlo Pro 3 add-on camera won’t break the bank. At about $120 per camera, the Arlo Pro 3 is surprisingly affordable.
On the flip side, if you don’t already have an Arlo SmartHub, then be prepared to shell out over $250 for your Pro 3 starter kit. That seems pricey for a security camera, but considering you get two Arlo Pro 3 cameras for your money, it’s actually a good value.
The Arlo Pro 3 is an advanced camera with impressive smart features, and the cost for a two-camera kit breaks down to less than $150 each. Not bad for such a high-end device.
Arlo Pro 4 pricing
Even though you don’t have to pay for a SmartHub, the Arlo Pro 4 is still more expensive than the Arlo Pro 3. That’s because it’s a newer release than its Pro 3 cousin.
The Arlo Pro 4 currently comes in one-camera and three-camera kits. There’s no two-camera option for the Pro 4, which is a little weird.
If you want to buy two Pro 4 security cameras at the same time, then you’ll still pay less than you would for the three-camera kit. But sometimes, you can find the three-camera kit on sale for pretty close to the same price as two single cameras, in which case, you may as well upgrade.

A single Arlo Pro 4 camera costs the same as the Google Nest Cam Outdoor, which has a lot of the same smart features, but, unlike the Pro 4, it’s not wireless. The Nest Cam Outdoor uses a power cord that you have to string around your house.

As long as you want at least two cameras, then the Arlo Pro 3 will save you money over the Arlo Pro 4.
But if you need just one camera and the Arlo Pro’s are too rich for your blood, then we recommend the Reolink Argus 3 Pro camera or the Arlo Essential camera. You’ll get similar features for less than you’d spend on either an Arlo Pro 3 kit or a single Pro 4 camera.
Arlo Smart subscription plans
Without an Arlo Smart subscription, both the Arlo Pro 3 and the Arlo Pro 4 aren’t worth the money. You need an Arlo Smart plan before your cameras can record in 2K video resolution and store footage in the cloud.
Arlo Smart also gives you access to smart alerts that can tell the difference between people, animals, cars, and packages.

* 4K resolution is not available on Arlo Pro 3 or Arlo Pro 4 cameras. You need an Arlo Ultra or Arlo Ultra 2.
Listen—you want smart alerts. It’s much better to be able to set your cameras to alert you about people and animals rather than get generic motion notifications about every car that drives down the street.
A lot of security cameras can tell the difference between people and objects, but not so many can tell the difference between a puppy and a truck. Both Arlo Pro cameras can.
Arlo Pro 3 vs. Arlo Pro 4: Features
The Arlo Pro 3 and Arlo Pro 4 have identical features except for one thing: the Arlo Pro 3 requires an Arlo SmartHub and the Arlo Pro 4 doesn’t.
If you want to use an Arlo SmartHub, then the Pro 4 will still work with it. But you don’t need to buy a hub along with your Pro 4 camera.
Other than the hub thing, these two security cameras are exactly the same.

Arlo Pro 3 vs. Arlo Pro 4: User experience
The user experience is essentially the same whether you get the Arlo Pro 3 or the Arlo Pro 4. The only difference is, because the Pro 3 requires a SmartHub, there’s an extra device to set up when you install your Arlo Pro 3 security camera.
Considering it will take you only about five minutes to set up the Arlo SmartHub, it’s not exactly a dealbreaker.
Otherwise, the Arlo Pro 3 and Arlo Pro 4 have identical user experiences. They use the same app, have the same settings and options, and the same video quality. And these cameras are pretty good at what they do: you get high-quality video, consistent alerts, and easy access to stored footage.
There are a few quirks with the Arlo Pro cameras that can be annoying. For example, when you open a notification in the Arlo app, the video doesn’t automatically rotate to fill your whole phone screen. But our complaints are relatively small. On the whole, both the Arlo Pro 3 and the Arlo Pro 4 perform well.
Arlo Pro 3 vs. Arlo Pro 4: Customer service
If you thought we were done saying these cameras are the same, you were wrong! Here’s one more for the road: these cameras are the same. The Arlo Pro 3 and the Arlo Pro 4 have the same customer service options.
Since the Pro 3 and Pro 4 are both Arlo cameras, you have access to the same support resources for both. Arlo has a bunch of online support resources on its website.
If you need something not covered on the website, you can contact Arlo reps through live chat or on the phone. You can also open a support case online if you have an issue covered by Arlo’s one-year warranty.
Arlo also has an online community forum where its users swap tips and tricks and can help resolve issues.

Arlo Pro 3 vs. Arlo Pro 4 cameras: FAQ
How long is the Arlo Pro 3 battery life?
Arlo says the Arlo Pro 3 battery will last between three and six months. If you put your Arlo Pro 3 in a high-traffic area and set the video to record in 2K resolution, then your battery won’t last as long. You can downgrade the settings to extend battery life, but you may lose out on quality.
Do Arlo Pro cameras require a subscription?
No, you can use either the Arlo Pro 3 or the Arlo Pro 4 without a subscription. But without an Arlo Smart subscription, you won’t have access to the Arlo Pro cameras’ best features.
Without an Arlo Smart plan, you’ll get basic 1080p resolution (instead of high-quality 2K), and you won’t have access to cloud storage and recordings. You also miss out on smart alerts, like person and animal detection.
What smart home integrations do Arlo Pro cameras have?
Both the Arlo Pro 3 and the Arlo Pro 4 work with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, SmartThings, and Apple HomeKit. The HomeKit integration can be a bit finicky—you may have to reset your camera a couple times to get it to connect.
Do Arlo Pro cameras work with HomeKit?
Yes, both the Arlo Pro 3 and Arlo Pro 4 cameras work with Apple HomeKit.
