Buckle up with Binge and Foxtel for a twisted journey through Lovecraft Country
How to watch Lovecraft Country online in Australia
HBO has been on a roll with its originals lately. In the past few months alone, we've had the outstanding true crime documentary series' I'll Be Gone in the Dark and Ridley Scott's science-fiction HBO Max Original Raised by Wolves. This after HBO's killer 2019, which saw the Emmy-winning series Watchmen and Succession Season 2. There's an overwhelming amount of premium drama streaming at the moment but there's one HBO series we're really sinking our teeth into, Lovecraft Country.
Here's how to watch Lovecraft Country online in Australia
When Binge first launched in Australia, there was no guarantee that subscribers would get the same fast-tracked HBO shows that Foxtel subscribers would get. However, with Lovecraft Country, Binge subscribers have been getting the same weekly episodes as those paying the Foxtel premium, which is promising.
As is usually the case with Foxtel's HBO shows, Lovecraft Country will become available for digital purchase/rental only after the season wraps up.
What is HBO’s Lovecraft Country?
HBO's Lovecraft Country is a horror-fantasy series adapted from the 2016 novel of the same name. The series follows young war veteran and sci-fi super-fan Atticus Freeman, his sweet uncle George, and new friend Letitia Lewis, on a road-trip through the twisted backwoods of segregated 1950s America. Like the novel, Lovecraft Country is a Black perspective on the work of H.P. Lovecraft, a severely racist horror-fantasy author. It's headed up by showrunner Misha Green (Underground) and stars Jonathan Majors (The Last Black Man in San Francisco), Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Birds of Prey), and Courtney B. Vance (The People v. O.J. Simpson).
When Atticus returns home from the Vietnam War, he's immediately caught up in a complex mystery involving his missing father. Joined by his Uncle George, and Letitia, Atticus and the gang set out on a dangerous quest for answers. On their journey, every road leads to a new nightmare, be it fantastical monsters and supernatural cultists, or real-life villainous scum like racist townsfolk and cops.
While the series could be broadly described as horror, each episode has a refreshing twist on an old trope. The first is a race against time when the team finds themselves in a "Sundown town" (a town where Black folk are hunted after dark), the second episode is a haunted house story, and the third feels like an adventure more akin to an Indiana Jones jaunt.
That's why we're hooked. Lovecraft Country gives you something completely new each week, without sacrificing meatier character arcs.
