Hot off BritBox's relaunch, Binge and Foxtel have partnered with Sony Pictures to bag a range of exclusive British dramas. The deal includes the streaming and broadcast rights to content such as, The Lady, Dear England, The Other Bennet Sister, and BAFTA-winning Mr Loverman.
Naturally BritBox Australia will still have a wider selection of british television, especially with its new extended library, but UK-TV lovers may need to split their time between the apps.
CEO of Foxtel, Kayo Sports and Binge, Hilary Perchard said: "British drama is wildly popular on Binge. This deal builds on a 20+ year relationship with Sony Pictures Television, delivering exclusive, premium first-run British dramas and hundreds of hours of U.S. fan-favourite TV series and films."
After losing access to premium HBO content to Max back in March, Binge needs to secure a new premium offering to differentiate itself from other streamers in the market. We anticipate the streamer will be quite aggressive in nabbing exclusive content to bolster its catalogue without the prestige drama it became synonymous with.
“Our agreement with Sony Pictures Television reinforces our commitment to providing world-class entertainment and value to our subscribers, complementing our much-loved BINGE Originals, as well as the diverse range of content acquired from our over 50 local and international distributors, including BBC Studios, NBCUniversal, Sky Studios and ITV.”
Additionally Binge and Foxtel will gain access to a wider range of Sony Pictures content including the Spider-verse Spider Man films. This deal looks similar to the Stan/Sony agreement we reported on last week, with both platforms to have access to titles like Dawson's Creek and The Nanny.
