After months of teasing a local launch, Warner Bros. Discovery's streaming service Max (formerly HBO Max) officially launches in Australia today. Max is just the latest in a long list of streaming services now available in Australia and is set to take Binge's place as the premiere destination for streaming HBO content at home.
In a bid to keep subscribers interested after the HBO exodus, Binge is offering 12 months of its Basic with ads plan for $4.99 per month (usually $10 per month) if you sign up no later than today.
Max offers monthly and annual plans at a discounted introductory rate and is available on Apple and Android smartphones and tablets and a variety of browsers, smart TVs, gaming consoles and a selection of some of the best streaming devices.
Max won't have a free trial when it launches in Australia but it will have discounted subscription rates up until the 30th of April 2025, starting with its ad-supported plan at $7.99 per month (which reverts to $11.99 per month after your first 12 months.)
Here's how much each Max plan will cost in Australia at launch and what you should expect to pay after the introductory pricing expires.
Those are some pretty expensive streaming plans. They're not too far removed from what Binge already charges, but you will pay more for the cheapest ad-supported tier and a little less for the Standard tier. Binge's $19 standard tier includes 4K streaming whereas Max Standard only streams in 1080p High Definition.
As a reminder, here's what Binge's streaming plans currently offer in Australia:
At launch, all Foxtel residential customers with an iQ3 box or later will get complimentary access to Max with Ads at no extra charge. The Max app will also be integrated into Foxtel's Hubbl ecosystem.
