GHD finally released a wide plated version of the Chronos straightener. Dubbed the Chronos Max, the straightener is the upgraded version of the GHD Max, with larger plates, a faster sleep mode, and a more ergonomic design.

Chronos Max has 85% larger plates when compared to the GHD Gold, but it is only 1mm wider than the GHD Max. While the original Max sits at 42mm, the Chronos is 43mm. It does however have smaller edges making for a better plate to chassis ratio. This lends itself to the more ergonomic design. Smaller edges combined with a more curved body should make the Chronos Max easier to manouever through your hair, especially when curling with it.

The straightener’s auto-sleep mode is down from 30 minutes to just 10 minutes. Now, after 10 minutes of inactivity the straightener will automatically power down so you don’t have to stress about burning your house down. On the flip size, the heat up time is five seconds slower this time round. While the GHD Max came to temp in 30 seconds, the Chronos Max takes 35 seconds.

On top of these improvements the Chronos also has an ultra gloss coating that is said to increase shine, along with international voltage, and a solid 2 year warranty. Some things don’t change though. GHD is sticking with its “optimum styling temperature” of 185˚C, even for this iron which is targeted for thick and curly haired people. These hair types usually need higher temperatures, while this optimum temperature is simultaneously too high for many other hair types such as bleached, or thin hair.

Once again I have to point out that when GHD references this temperature causing less breakage, or less hair damage, this is compared to either a competitor styler operating at 235˚C, or on straight, brown, caucasian hair. It makes for an unbalanced comparison, and small sample size, so just be cautious if you don’t fall into that category.

The new Chronos retails for $495, while the original Max is $380.
