Dyson's new air purifier focuses on removing Nitrogen Dioxide which it claims could improve skin conditions like dermatitis and eczema. According to Dyson, both N02 and PM (particulate matter) can creative oxidative stress and inflammation on the skin, and can even accelerate the break down of collagen and elastin.
To counter this, the Purifier Hot+Cool HP2 De-NOx includes a K-carbon filter which is said to improve N02 capture over other filters on the market, while still having a HEPA 13 rating. While there are studies that support these skin claims, lung irritation is a more common symptom of high Nitrogen Dioxide levels. According to NSW Health, N02 can cause an increased risk of lung infections, a higher susceptibility to asthma triggers, and more frequent asthma attacks in asthma sufferers. In healthy people airway inflammation is another consideration.
For asthma and allergy sufferers, this could make a significant difference in the home. Nitrogen Dioxide commonly comes from burning materials. While car exhausts are the most prevelant source of this pollutant, household appliances like heaters, cook tops, fire places, and even candles can release more into the home. Although unflued gas heaters are the worst offenders. Alongside the PM 10 and PM 2.5 particles, these can cause severe irritation for those with otherwise healthy lungs.
Aside from the purification element, the device also has both heating and cooling elements. The bladeless fan is rated to cover 81 cubic metres for both air purification and cooling, but just 35 cubic metres for heating purposes. Regardless of the setting, it can deliver over 290L of air per second.
The De-NOx is available from today from Dyson for $1,199. Demos are available in Dyson stores across the country.
