The fastest NBN provider in Australia just got overtaken

New figures released by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have seen Telstra reclaim its place as the fastest NBN provider in Australia. 

This marks the second time that this particular provider has topped the regulator's quarterly Measuring Broadband Australia report, with Telstra ranking number one for the first time back in June 2024. 

This time around, previous-winner Exetel slipped down to second place at 103.7% of average advertised speeds during peak hours. Meanwhile, Optus managed to steal the third-place slot from TPG with 103% of average advertised speeds during peak hours.

The ACCC's regular check-in with local internet providers covers most of the major providers, including TPG, Superloop, Dodo, iPrimus, Leaptel and Aussie Broadband. In line with previous data, the ACCC's latest report also noted a gradual rise in overall service quality. Fixed line connections improved from 101.1% of advertised download speeds on average in the last report to 101.6% over the past quarter. What's more, these gains were matched by a rise from 88.9% to 89.6% of advertised upload speeds.

The ACCC's data remains one of the better benchmarks out there when it comes to keeping tabs on which NBN providers are living up to their promises and which are falling short.
