After years of Switch 2 rumors and unrelenting leaks, Nintendo has finally made its next gaming handheld official. Barring unexpected and exceptional circumstances, it seems like the Switch 2 is going to hit the market sometime later this year.
Exactly when is an open-ended question though. Right now, Nintendo is remaining tight-lipped. However, there are a few big clues and multiple scenarios to consider. We don't know enough to definitely answer the question of when the Switch 2 will release in Australia, but we know enough to start making a few guesses.
At the time of writing, Nintendo has yet to set out any official release date or launch window for the Nintendo Switch 2. However, that's not to say we know nothing or that we don't know enough to make a good guess or two.
There are a few obvious facts and factors that we should keep in mind when it comes to speculating about when the Switch 2 will come to Australia.
With those details disclosed, let's take a look at the possibilities for what the launch of the Switch 2 in Australia could look like.
This one is unlikely for a few different reasons. Nintendo has teed up a Nintendo Direct presentation to detail more about the console on the 2 April 2025. If there's any chance that the company would announce an imminent launch for the device in the days or weeks following that live-stream, it's a slim one.
Famously, Sega launched the Dreamcast on the same day it announced only for the console to end up being massive flop. Safe to say, Nintendo seems more likely to steer away from that precedent rather than emulate it.
There's no stronger signal for this than the fact that we haven't heard anything from the many consumer electronics and mass market retailers that will likely end up stocking the Switch 2. If the Switch 2 was this close to hitting store shelves, we'd probably see a lot more leaks about it.
The next scenario is a little more likely by comparison. It's not out of the question that Nintendo could look to launch the Switch 2 in the month following its big reveal.
The argument both for and against this has to do with the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events slated to run from April to June 2025. One hand, it's easy to imagine those events coinciding with the launch of the handheld in each region or offering those who attend the chance to buy or preorder their Switch 2 on the spot.
That being said, the tour does run until June 2025 and it's maybe a little more believable that Nintendo might wait until the whole thing is done before releasing its latest gaming handheld to the masses.
For better or worse, this is currently our best guess when it comes to when the Nintendo Switch 2 will launch in Australia. It lines up with the cadence for the launch of the original Switch, it's right after the conclusion of the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience tour and it's well before the holiday season. In other words, it ticks all the boxes.
Still, we'll have to wait and see how it all shakes out. Right now though, June 2025 is our best guess for when the Switch 2 will launch in Australia.
