Nearly eight years after the release of Nintendo's hybrid handheld console, the company has finally revealed its follow-up: the Nintendo Switch 2.
At just over two minutes long, the teaser trailer doesn't reveal too much about the new console but it does confirm plenty of previously rumoured features.
The trailer highlights the bigger display, which is reported to be an 8-inch LED display; a good deal larger than the 6.2 and 7-inch displays of the original Switch and the Switch OLED. While not confirmed in the trailer, the Switch 2 reportedly won't launch with an OLED display.
New and improved Joy-Cons were also on show: they’re larger to fit the bigger display, and connect magnetically, hopefully solving a common issue with the current Joy-Con’s sliding mechanism. The new Joy-cons also appear to have an additional sensor on the inside edge; the trailer also depicts two Joy-Cons skating around a surface which coincides with the rumours that the Joy-Cons could have mouse-like functionality when detached, similar to the Lenovo Legion Go.
The Switch 2’s full-length kickstand appears to be a little more flexible, offering more viewing angles for tabletop mode. There’s an additional USB-C port on the top of the device. Besides the sheer convenience of charging it from the top in tabletop mode, any additional utility of the second USB-C port remains a mystery.
Other than an updated design, the trailer didn’t offer any more details on the new dock, which is rumoured to enable 4K resolution when playing the Switch 2 in TV mode. We did get a very short glimpse of the Switch 2 playing what appears to be a new Mario Kart title, which looks like it can support up to 24 players on the track at once (twice as many as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.)
Those hungry for more details will have to wait a little longer. Nintendo will hold a Direct on the 2nd of April in 2025 where more specs and pre-order information is likely to be announced.
