Quantum Fiber provides fiber internet service to 10.9 million people in 16 states. According to federal maps and our own proprietary data, Quantum Fiber is most widely available in Orlando, Florida; Salt Lake City, Utah; Phoenix, Arizona; and Denver, Colorado. It’s available to around 2% of the population, scattered across the West Coast (sorry, California, not you), Midwest, and Florida.

As recently as 2024, Quantum Fiber announced its goal to expand to 450,000 new locations by 2027. However, in May 2025, AT&T announced its plans to acquire around 95% of Lumen's Quantum Fiber business. The deal closed on February 2, 2026, and the service has since been rebranded as Quantum Fiber from AT&T. More than 1 million fiber subscribers across 11 states are now AT&T customers.

Read on to see where Quantum Fiber is currently available and what the future holds with AT&T’s newest acquisition announcement.

Where is Quantum Fiber available?

2025 coverage map of Quantum Fiber

Owned by Lumen Technologies (which also owns the CenturyLink internet brand), Quantum Fiber stands out with its vast range of fiber speeds, minimal fees, free modem, and no contracts. It’s not the first internet provider to offer predictable monthly pricing (see Verizon, T-Mobile, and GFiber plans), but holy smokes, a provider without built-in price hikes is a serious selling point.

While Quantum Fiber’s pricing does depend on where you live (more on that below).

According to federal broadband maps, Quantum Fiber serves about 2% of the U.S. population. Quantum Fiber’s official website lists the 10 states where you can find its fiber internet packages:

  1. Washington
  2. Oregon
  3. Nevada
  4. Utah
  5. Arizona
  6. Colorado
  7. Nebraska
  8. Minnesota
  9. Wisconsin
  10. Florida

How is Quantum Fiber expanding internet service?

In 2020, CenturyLink rebranded itself and became Lumen Technologies, which led to rebranding its fiber-to-the-home business as Quantum Fiber. To expand its fiber offerings, it uses XGS-PON technology to increase bandwidth without modifying existing fiber in the ground, providing speeds up to 8,000Mbps.

Since 2022, Quantum Fiber has announced its large fiber expansion to 20 communities in 12 states, including Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. This included a 25,000 mile route in Colorado, 19,000 miles in Washington, and 9,000 miles in Iowa. In 2022, Lumen also announced it would bring speeds up to 8,000Mbps to cities near Denver, Minneapolis, and Seattle.

Based on the Lumen 2023 Investor Day Presentation, Lumen aimed to add 125,000 total fiber subscribers in 2023, 225,000 in 2024, and reach 450,000 in 2027.

During my time reading, scrolling, and digging through Quantum Fiber’s expansion news, I noticed an absence of expansion news in 2024. What happened to the Lumen in 2023 with its enthusiastic goals to expand in multiple cities? AT&T happened.

AT&T announces its acquisition of Lumen’s fiber internet markets

In May 2025, AT&T announced plans to acquire 95% of Lumen’s Mass Markets fiber internet (about 1 million fiber customers and 4 million fiber locations across 11 states). It hopes to close this deal at the beginning of 2026.

This acquisition means that Quantum Fiber subscribers will eventually transition to AT&T Fiber customers. Pending regulatory approval, this move will help AT&T extend its fiber coverage to about 60 million total fiber locations by the end of 2030 (about double of what it has in 2025).

What are other internet options besides Quantum Fiber?

GFiber (previously Google Fiber) has extremely limited availability. However, according to Federal Broadband data, you may get both Quantum Fiber and GFiber if you live in Salt Lake City, Utah; Des Moines, Iowa; Denver, Colorado; and Pocatello, Idaho (to name a handful). Google's fiber service is similar to Quantum Fiber in that they both keep consistent monthly prices, neither requires contracts, and both offer some enormous fiber speeds.

Cox Internet offers cable internet packages (its fiber offerings are much more limited) in many states where you can’t find Quantum Fiber such as California, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and some states on the East Coast. In a showdown between Cox vs. Quantum Fiber, Quantum Fiber still comes out on top. However, Cox offers some great bundles (especially if you get its Cox Mobile service), and you can still enjoy up to 2,000Mbps in reliable cable speeds.

AT&T Fiber Internet is worth consideration. Based on its recent announcement that it plans to acquire Lumen Technologies, which owns Quantum Fiber. It also happens to be a worthwhile internet option. It’s widely available on the West Coast, across the Midwest, and in some parts the East Coast. It doesn’t charge you almost any fees (minus a professional installation fee if you don’t opt for free self-installation). It always has fresh sign-up deals for new customers, and it will even cover your full cancellation fee if you switch from a provider that’s locked you into a contract.
