Cox Internet speeds

While Cox advertises speeds from 100Mbps to 2,000Mbps, Reviews.org speed test data shows that the average Cox download speed is 242.63Mbps. That makes Cox the third-fastest internet provider in the country.

Cox’s average upload speed is 43.24Mbps, which is fast for upload speed. And its latency is decent, too, at a cool 21-and-a-half milliseconds. (That beats out even some popular fiber providers.) All in all, Cox Internet’s speeds are reasonably competitive, especially for a cable internet brand.

Data derived from results of the Reviews.org speed test, Dec. 1, 2023–Dec. 1, 2024.

Not all cities with Cox Internet reach these speeds. Unfortunately, there's no clear pattern to which city sizes can expect them. West Chester and Murrieta are suburbs, Fort Eustis is actually a neighborhood in Newport News, and Johnson and Long Beach are cities in their own right.

However, if you live in Virginia, you might have a better chance of getting higher-than-average Cox speeds—four of the 10 fastest Cox cities are in Old Dominion.

But those of us who live outside of Virginia can still anticipate decent speeds, considering that Cox is the third-fastest internet provider nationwide.

What’s the best internet speed to get from Cox?

To meet the internet needs of a standard household, you typically want around 500Mbps.

With 500Mbps, you can download the entire run of The Office in less than half an hour—that’s fast! Unless you work with large media files daily, you’re unlikely to need anything speedier. But if you do, Cox also offers a plan with 1,000Mbps in download and upload speeds and another with 2,000.

Which internet plan from Cox should I pick?

I recommend Cox’s Go Even Faster plan, which is 500Mbps for $60 a month for the first two years. While it's expensive, it's not feasible for many multi-person households to go lower than 400–500Mbps.

If you live alone or your family doesn't use the internet that much, you might be able to swing the Go Faster plan (250Mbps for $50 each month for 24 months). But for a household with more than one or two people, that’s the lowest speed I recommend.

What can you do with 2,000Mbps speeds?

With Cox Internet’s Go Beyond Fast 2,000Mbps plan, the sky’s the limit. You can download all of The Office in five minutes at a 2,000Mbps speed. You can also connect an unearthly number of smart home devices to your internet, stream multiple series on several TVs around the house, or even have a small home business in your basement.

Cox speed test FAQ

What should my Cox Internet speed be?

Your Cox Internet speed should be fast enough to meet your internet needs. I recommend getting at least 250Mbps and even 500Mbps if you can swing it.

If you’re having pacing trouble with your Cox Internet or getting mega-slow results on a speed test, consider contacting Cox for help.

Does Cox limit internet speed?

Cox doesn’t precisely limit internet speed. It has a maximum plan speed of 2,000Mbps, but if your speed tests sometimes exceed your plan, well, I haven’t heard of Cox throttling networks or issuing fines.

Why is my Cox Internet speed so slow?

Your Cox Internet may be slow because your devices have too much junk software or aren't plugged directly into the router, or because Cox just isn't delivering. Whatever the case, you can always try our ten easy ways to speed up your connection and see if they help.
