Vodafone’s mobile network will cover 98.4% of Australians from January 30 when it will grow from approximately 400,000 square kilometres to more than 1,000,000 square kilometres.
Currently, Vodafone’s network covers 95.4% of Australians, putting it behind Telsta’s network which covers 99.7% of the population and Optus’ network which covers 98.5%.
The increase in coverage will bring Vodafone just behind Optus by 0.1%.
A partnership between Vodafone’s parent company TPG Telecom and Optus is behind the change which will see Vodafone network customers benefit from increased coverage in regional Australia.
In turn, Optus will get access to Vodafone’s mobile spectrum in the regions, unlocking extra capacity and faster speeds for its customers.
All Vodafone network customers including Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) like TPG, iiNet, felix, Kogan, Lebara and LycaMobile will benefit from the network expansion.
Customers don’t need to take any action as the expansion will happen in the background.
Overall, the change means mobile customers in regional and rural parts of Australia can now take advantage of Vodafone network plans which tend to be cheaper than Telstra and Optus’ plans.
