The upcoming Fallout TV show is looking to welcome a whole new audience to the wastelands, vaults and violence of the bestselling open-world roleplaying games. It's the first foray into live-action adaptations for the Bethesda Games Studios and one that promises to bring the crooked and colourful post-apocalyptic American landscape to life in a whole new medium.

If you're a longtime fan who can't wait to watch or a newcomer drawn in by the series' alluring retrofuturist bent, here's what you need to know about Fallout and where to stream it in Australia.

Fallout is coming exclusively to Amazon when it makes its debut in 2024.

The streamer greenlit the gaming adaptation back in January 2022, which promises to combine the charming violence of its source material with the storytelling chops of Westworld co-creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan.

When does Fallout (2024) release in Australia?

The first season of Fallout is slated to drop on April 11 2024.

Amazon hasn't laid out a release schedule for the entire first season, but if recent releases like The Peripheral are any indication it's likely that the first three episodes will drop at once and then the remainder will arrive on a week-by-week basis.

The first season of Fallout is set to run for 10 episodes.

What is Fallout (2024) about?

Fallout is an adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name, though not a direct one. Rather than retell the story of the Fallout games one beat at a time, all indications suggest it'll be a new story that shares a setting and themes with its source material. The streaming original will also feature a star-studded cast including Kyle McLachlan, Walter Goggins and Ella Purnell.

While each Fallout game has its individual narrative and characters, it does tend to revisit certain ideas and archetypes with each installment. For example, there's a vault dweller who embarks on some kind of quest that takes from the safety of their home into the unknown. It's very easy to imagine the show putting its own spin on that tradition.

The official synopsis for the series is as follows:

"Two-hundred years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind—and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them."

What is Amazon Prime Video?

Amazon Prime Video is Amazon's take on a streaming service. It's similar to Netflix, but with a few key differences. Like other such streaming services, your subscription gets you access to both original series like The Rings of Power and Fleabag as well as licensed TV shows and movies like The Northman and House.

While Amazon Prime Video offers many of the same bells and whistles, such as 4K HDR streaming  and offline downloads, it differs from most of the competition in one big way. It's not a standalone service. Instead, Amazon bundles it with an Amazon Prime membership. That, the existence of a 30-day free trial and the lower price tag that kicks in after the fact, helps position the service as one of the better value options out there.

Amazon Prime Video doesn't have everything, but what it does have in terms of  original content is generally quite good and the cost of keeping up with it is significantly less than most of the competition.
