Stan has nixed its cancellation period for pay-per-view special events through the online streamer. Previously users could cancel their purchase for Stan Events up to four hours before the advertised start time and receive a full refund, but now the purchase is final unless the event itself is cancelled.

The change reflects similar policies from other pay-per-view providers like Kayo, although it isn’t standard procedure. When purchasing Main Event or pay-per-view events on Kayo, users will pay an upfront, non-refundable fee at the time of purchase. A subscription is not required to gain access, but during the event users will gain access to all of Kayo’s catalogue. On Foxtel however, pay-per-view purchases can be cancelled up until the scheduled start time of the event.

Realistically Foxtel and Stan’s previous terms are generous. Change of mind refunds aren’t available for live, in person events, and considering how behind Australia is on digital products this logic flows from there. While users are eligible for a refund in the case of a cancelled event both online and in person, what remedies are available for rescheduled events or those with major changes are unknown.

Stan’s terms and conditions note that events are “subject to change (including the fight card) and a Stan Event may be rescheduled to another time or date.” While a previous version of the T&Cs noted the four hour cancellation window would apply to the rescheduled time, this has now been removed. According to the ACCC, significant changes to in person events may give consumers the right to a refund or other remedies, however this is dependent on the reason for the change, the nature of it, and the terms and conditions of the ticket. Stan may, at its discretion, offer remedies for rescheduled pay-per-view events, but its T&Cs may make it difficult for consumers.

As of the current version, users can still find a work around to get out of paying for a pre-purchased Stan Event although we can’t guarantee this will actually work. Cancelling your Stan subscription will have your access disconnected, and your purchase of the event will be cancelled. The wording here is tricky however. Stan doesn’t mention a refund of the fee anywhere within this clause, so attempt it with caution.

These changes came into effect via updates to Stan’s Terms and Conditions as of May 20, 2025. Customers have not yet been notified of the changes, and it is unclear if they will be. We reached out to Stan, but they did not respond to our request for comment.
