Samsung is following through on its promise to deliver a slimmer version of the Galaxy S25.
Announced at the company's latest hardware showcase, the new Galaxy S25 Edge squeezes many of the same specs, features, bells and whistles seen in the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus and Galaxy S25 Ultra into a form-factor that’s both thinner and lighter.
All told, Samsung has shaved off almost a millimeter and a half here. The new device clocks in at 5.8mm relative to the Galaxy S25’s 7.2mm. Weight-wise, the Galaxy S25 Edge adds up to just 163g. That sum is a significant subtraction on the 190g seen on the Galaxy S25 Plus but just above the 162g seen on the standard S25.
Samsung's slimmer S25 goes on pre-order from today ahead of a 30 May 2025 launch date. Those looking to pick up the new phone will be able to find it available outright through all the usual retailers and on a plan through Optus, Vodafone and Telstra.
When it comes to pricing, the Galaxy S25 Edge sits neatly between the Galaxy S25 Plus and the Galaxy S25 Ultra at $1,849. Doubling the baseline storage to 512GB raises that sum to $2,049. However, as usual, those who pre-order the device will be eligible for a free storage upgrade. In other words, you can get the 512GB for $1,849 rather than usual price. That offer will expire on 30 May 2025.
Despite that leaner shape and size though, the Galaxy S25 Edge is no less powerful. Under the hood, the lean hardware here is backed up by a Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor and 12GB of RAM.
The Galaxy S25 Edge comes in two storage variants - 256GB and 512GB - and three colors: Titanium Silver, Titanium Jetblack and Titanium Iceblue. Regardless of the shade you settle on, you’re looking at titanium edges on the side and Corning's Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 protection on the front. The latter offers 1 meter of drop protection.
As far as durability features go, that's handy to have. That said, it is something of a downgrade when it comes to the 2.2 meters of drop protection offered by the Gorilla Glass Armor 2 found on the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Another constant here is the usual emphasis on AI apps and features. While Samsung's slimmest Galaxy device to date doesn’t come with any new tricks per say, it is slated to ship with support for same growing library of Galaxy AI features found in its siblings.
Like those devices, the Galaxy S25 Edge will also arrive with seven years of OS updates and seven years of security updates. However, it’s worth noting that the usual small print remains around many of the aforementioned AI features.
As previously reported, many of Samsung's Galaxy AI features come with the promise that they are only guaranteed to be free until the end of 2025. At this point, it's not clear what will happen when that deadline arrives but the idea that you might have to start paying for some of these features later down the line is definitely something to keep in mind.
Although the Galaxy S25 Edge does match its siblings on most fronts, there are a few differences that those sizing Samsung’s latest up may want to keep in mind. For instance, while the 6.7-inch AMOLED screen here is identical to the one found on the Galaxy S25 Plus the battery powering that display is 1000mAh smaller at just 3900mAh.
The specific spec is likely to be make-or-break for the Galaxy S25 Edge. As smaller handsets like the iPhone 13 Mini have demonstrated in the past, the reality of relying on more lightweight device can sometimes be saddled by significant trade-offs when it comes to battery life.
The other big twist on the formula here is found on the back of the Galaxy S25 Edge. Even if the main camera sensor on Samsung's slim smartphone is a match for the 200MP one found on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, it doesn’t feature nearly so many additional lenses as either that device or the standard Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25 Plus. There's a second 12MP ultrawide lens in the mix but, as with the battery life, whether these technical trade-offs are worth it remains to be seen.
