Like many of your favourite celebrities, Dyson's latest stick vacuum has slimmed down boasting a waistline diameter of just 38mm. The PencilVac manages to cram a Hyperdymium 140k motor, a compacting dustbin, and connectivity features into a formfactor no wider than a 20 cent coin.
Admittedly this is an impressive feat. The PencilVac is Dyson's slimmest and most streamlined vacuum to date, but with this new figure comes practicality concerns. The integrated dustbin only has an 80ml volume. In our testing we have found anything under 400ml is too small for an effective clean in one go. According to Dyson its compressing bin design means it can handle up to five times more than the capacity, but that is still on the small side for most households. Obviously we don't know how this will go in a real-world setting just yet, but the bin capacity does give me pause.
On top of its skinny design Dyson has reimagined its cleaning head. Rather than the usual motorised rollers you're used to seeing on your vacuum, the PencilVac features the new Fluddycones. Made up of four conical, nylon bristled brushes, these rotate in opposite directions making for better hair pick up and less tangles. We have seen similar technology on robot vacuum cleaners which has proved to be effective in our testing, so it is nice to see this come across to stick vacuums too.
On top of the new design Dyson has also included some old favourites. The brushhead uses a laser-like light which illuminates small dust particles you may otherwise miss. We fell morbidly in love with this feature on the V12 Detect Slim and it has proven to be a staple across Dyson's range ever since. The device also comes equipped with a flexible head for 360 degree manouverability.
This will be Dyson's first connected stick vacuum which syncs up to the MyDyson app. In the app users can find extras like battery information, and filter maintenance data.
We don't currently know when the PencilVac will arrive in Australia. Dyson says "soon" but that could mean anything. Pricing is also TBD, but if we know Dyson we'll be looking at somewhere around the $1,500 mark as a starting point. You can sign up for updates at the Dyson website.
