After years of Switch 2 rumors and unrelenting leaks, Nintendo has finally made its next gaming handheld official. Barring unexpected and exceptional circumstances, the Switch 2 is going to hit the store shelves of your local EB Games later this year.

Read on for all the juicy details about when and where you'll be able to find Nintendo's new handheld in Australia.

When will the Nintendo Switch 2 release in Australia?

Following a Nintendo Direct in April 2025, it has been confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will launch in Australia on 6 June 2025.

The console will be available in two packages. The cheaper of the two comes in at a recommended retail price of $699 and includes the following:

  • 1x The Nintendo Switch 2
  • 2x Joy-Con 2 controllers
  • 1x Joy-Con 2 Grip
  • 2x Joy-Con 2 Straps
  • 1x Nintendo Switch 2 Dock
  • 1x HDMI Cable
  • 1x AC Adapter
  • 1x USB-C Charging Cable

Then, there's a bundle available which includes a copy of Mario Kart World, which is priced at an RRP of $769.

Where can you preorder the Switch 2 in Australia?

At the time of writing, the Nintendo Switch 2 is now available for preorder through the following Australian retailers:

  • EB Games
  • JB Hi-Fi
  • Big W
  • Officeworks

Did we correctly predict the release date for the Switch 2 in Australia?

Our best guess (plus the rest)

While we now know exactly when to expect the Switch 2 to release in Australia, it's fun to look back at our prior predictions to see how close we were. Our original estimates for the launch period for the new Nintendo handheld were based on the following:

Option 1: April 2025

This one is unlikely for a few different reasons. Nintendo has teed up a Nintendo Direct presentation to detail more about the console on the 2 April 2025. If there's any chance that the company would announce an imminent launch for the device in the days or weeks following that live-stream, it's a slim one.

Famously, Sega launched the Dreamcast on the same day it announced only for the console to end up being massive flop. Safe to say, Nintendo seems more likely to steer away from that precedent rather than emulate it.

There's no stronger signal for this than the fact that we haven't heard anything from the many consumer electronics and mass market retailers that will likely end up stocking the Switch 2. If the Switch 2 was this close to hitting store shelves, we'd probably see a lot more leaks about it.

Option 2: May 2025

Nintendo Switch 2 Experience

The next scenario is a little more likely by comparison. It's not out of the question that Nintendo could look to launch the Switch 2 in the month following its big reveal.

The argument both for and against this has to do with the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events slated to run from April to June 2025. One hand, it's easy to imagine those events coinciding with the launch of the handheld in each region or offering those who attend the chance to buy or preorder their Switch 2 on the spot.

That being said, the tour does run until June 2025 and it's maybe a little more believable that Nintendo might wait until the whole thing is done before releasing its latest gaming handheld to the masses.

Option 3: June 2025

For better or worse, this is currently our best guess when it comes to when the Nintendo Switch 2 will launch in Australia. It lines up with the cadence for the launch of the original Switch, it's right after the conclusion of the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience tour and it's well before the holiday season. In other words, it ticks all the boxes.

Still, we'll have to wait and see how it all shakes out. Right now though, June 2025 is our best guess for when the Switch 2 will launch in Australia.
