Although The Barbie Movie had the widest release, Barbie has been off having cinematic adventures since 2001. Since then 45 Barbie movies have been released, some to cinemas, some direct to VHS (I feel old), and others straight to streaming. These days you can catch pretty much every Barbie movie on either Stan, or Netflix (and one randomly on iQIYI - a free streaming service).

The 45 movies can be roughly broken up into four major categories; classic adaptions and original plots, modern Barbie, Barbie's vlogger era, and straight to streaming.

Across the eras, the overall style of the movies hasn't changed much. They started, and continue to be CGI animations staring Barbie, her friends and her family. There aren't exactly throughlines running through the entirety of the catalogue, but they do make some thematic shifts.

We'll break down where to stream each Barbie movie, and give some insights into the categories as we go.

Where to watch the early Barbie movies

Classic adaptations and movie magic

The early Barbie movies are best categorised as classic adaptions, with a few original plots dabbled in. Millenials will likely be most familiar with these - think Barbie crossed with ballets like The Nutcracker, and Swan Lake.

Other classic stories were also covered off like The Three Musketeers, and A Christmas Carol (which has nothing on The Muppets one), but Mattel quickly became emboldened to try their own hand at storytelling. The Fairytopia series was the first original Barbie movie which came out in 2005.

This era of Barbie's film adaptation adventures spanned from 2001 - 2009, with 16 releases during that time. These are all available to stream on Stan.

Where to watch Barbie movies with modern plots

Fashion, music, and family

Next up Barbie dabbled in more modern plots centred less around princesses, and more around friends, family, and fashion. From 2010 - 2015 Mattel, in partnership with Universal Studios and home Entertainment released 14 films that went direct to DVD. Now you can watch them all on Stan, apart from Barbie in a Mermaid Tale which is free to watch on iQIYI.

Out of these 14 movies, six of them were written by one woman - Elise Allen. Allen worked on a range of kids TV shows and films including Saved By The Bell, and Polly Pocket, and has also worked with Disney on a bunch of novels to accompany its big movies like Inside Out, and Frozen.

Where to watch Barbie's vlogging era movies

A day in the life

Once home video releases stopped being worth money, Barbie did what so many people did and pivotted to video. In 2015 Barbie debutted the Barbie Vlogger web series on YouTube, and with it came a shift in character for Barbie movies. Rather than Barbie playing other characters, she played herself in different roles.

Between 2015 and 2017 Barbie becomes a spy, a treasure hunter (led by a puppy), and even dissappears into a video game. These were a wholly different direction for Barbie movies, but felt more true to Barbie as an icon. Barbie can be anything, but she is always herself.

These five films are all available to watch on Stan.

Where to watch Barbie's Netflix movies

This one is obvious, I fear

Eventually Barbie also came across to streaming, striking a deal with Netflix for a set of prequel and sequel movies to the TV show Barbie: Dreamhouse Adventures.

These began to roll out on the platform from 2017, with eight currently available and another one set for release later in 2025.

Where to watch The Barbie Movie

This wouldn't be an all encompassing list if we didn't include The Barbie Movie on here. As the 45th release, The Barbie Movie has had the biggest audiences, and the best reception of all of Barbie's adventures.

The cinematic masterpiece in pink is available to stream through both Netflix, and Binge in Australia.
