Our favourite movies under 90 minutes

Faced with cancellation, Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian) makes a last ditch effort to save his late night talk show. It is Halloween in 1977, and Night Owls is channeling the occult.

Alongside a psychic medium, a magician, and a parapsychologist, Jack hosts the only survivor from a satanic mass suicide, 13-year old Lily (Ingrid Torelli). Allegedly, Lily is possessed by a demonic spirit nicknamed Mr Wiggles. Throughout the broadcast the guests experience all kinds of paranormal ordeals, which only escalate as Jack coaxes Mr Wiggles to come out and play.

The film jumps stylistically between documentary, gritty drama, and a bright, shiny talk show format. It is wonderfully paced, and will keep you on the edge of your seat for its whole 86 minutes. 

Aliens mistake a sci-fi television show for a documentary and enlist the cast to help save their planet. The surly co-stars are anything but the heroes they portray, plus they hate each other.

The 90's cult classic follows Jason (Tim Allen), Gwen (Sigourney Weaver), Alexander (Alan Rickman), Fred (Tony Shalhoub), and Tommy (Sam Rockwell) who once starred in an adventure series Galaxy Quest. Their success has middled, and the crew are now stuck making promotional appearances at fan conventions.

Tempted by an offer he believes to be one of these appearances, Jason goes with the aliens to a replica of the Galaxy Quest starship (which he thinks is a set). Here he encounters the enemy Sarris, and in character gives orders that temporarily defeat him. His win won't last long, and soon the rest of the TV stars will need to join him for some real heroism.

18 year old Elliot (Maisy Stella) trips out on mushrooms and forms a connection, through time and space, with her 39-year old self (Aubrey Plaza).

The two stay in contact with her future self dolling out wisdom and warnings about what is to come. There are some pieces of advice she can't explain however, and when young Elliot meets Chad she struggles to stay on the path her old ass is keeping her to.

Rippingly funny, and just as emotionally charged, My Old Ass explores the connections we make and how they shape you.

People will do a lot to combat work stress, and Peter Gibbons (Roy Livingston) was willing to try hypnosis. Mid session, just as he has become untangled from the mess of his terrible manager, overbearing girlfriend, and tedious micromanagement, the hypnotist has a heart attack. Peter is stuck, in complete bliss, no longer caring about his job.

His new nonchalant attitude may be good for him, but back at the office it sure makes him stand out.

You probably already know this movie from the memes. You know that clip where a group just go to town on a printer with baseball bats? That gives you a sense of the kind of satirical office humour you'll get.
