Cuckoo

Starring: Jessica Henwick, Dan Stevens, Jan Bluthardt
  • Release: 2024
  • Genre: Thriller
  • Runtime: 1 hour 42 minutes

Hunter Schafer is part of a larger ensemble but Cuckoo puts her in the leading role as the protagonist of this dark thriller.

Uprooted by a move to Germany and the sudden passing of her mother, Schafer plays the role of a young woman named Gretchen. She soon finds herself working the local desk at a hotel in a small town in the Bavarian alps where things are hardly as simple and idyllic as they first appear.

The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Starring: Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Viola Davis, Peter Dinklage
  • Release: 2023
  • Genre: Science Fiction
  • Runtime: 2 hours 37 minutes

Based on the book of the same name, The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is a prequel to the Jennifer Lawrence-led trilogy that brought Suzanne Collin's popular dystopian young adult fiction series to the big screen.

Hunter Schafer plays a key role in the movie (though admittedly not one with a huge amount of screentime attached to it) as the sister to the young Cornelius Snow (played by Tom Blythe). Snow goes on to become the villain of the Hunger Games movies but A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is all about his rise to power, his complicated relationship with the a tribute from District 12 (Rachel Zegler) and the gradual transformation of the titular bloodsport into the glitzy spectacle seen in the original films.

Kinds of Kindness

Starring: Willem Defoe, Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons
  • Release: 2024
  • Genre: Black comedy
  • Runtime: 2 hours 45 minutes

After the relatively-straightforward adaptation of Poor Things in 2023, Yorgos Lanthismos is back at the sickos table with Kinds of Kindness. An anthology that's darkly comedic in tone, the film is structured like a collection of short stories. Each of the three sees the main cast change up their performance and character, so there's a lot of variety layed on top of Lanthismos' usual leanings towards the absurd.

Schafer's role is pretty small here, more-or-less amounting to a cameo in the film's third act. All the same, Kinds of Kindness is a fascinating and unique movie that's well worth tracking down.

Belle

Starring: Kaho Nakamura, Ryo Narita, Shôta Sometani
  • Release: 2021
  • Genre: Animation
  • Runtime: 2 hours 2 minutes

Directed by Mamoru Hosoda and produced by Studio Chizu, Belle is a gorgeous and decidedly-modern remix of Beauty & The Beast. It doesn't have as much heart as some of Hosoda's other films, but the lavish visuals and soundtrack involved more than help make up the difference.

Hunter's role here is one of the best friend to film's protagonist, though you will have to watch the movie with English dub to hear it.

Euphoria

Starring: Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Maude Apatow, Sydney Sweeney
  • Release: 2019 - Present
  • Genre: Drama
  • Seasons: 2

If you've somehow managed to sleep on the hype attached to the HBO series, Euphoria is the TV series that put Hunter Schafer on the map. Created by Sam Levinson and loosely based on the Israeli miniseries of the same name, Euphoria is an American drama series that follows the highs, lows and interpersonal drama within of a group of teenagers at a modern high school.

Schafer's role in the series is a pretty critical one. She plays the primary love interest for Zendaya's character in the series and even scored a co-writing credit for her involvement with an special one-off episode focused on her character. Euphoria's diverse cast, mesmerizing cinematography, compelling performances and undiluted commitment to being extremely over-the-top all of the time help it appeal to those who usually wouldn't bother with it given the setting.
