If you want to use your mobile phone while you’re overseas, there’s a selection of mobile providers that are worth being with for their international roaming perks. Vodafone has one of the best international roaming options, but Optus is another worth considering for SIM-only and prepaid users.

Before we jetset into all things Optus international roaming, here’s a list of popular mobile plans from our comparison engine.

Optus SIM-only plans that support international roaming

The most straightforward way for international roaming with Optus is via an Optus Choice Plus plan. Check out the list of Optus Choice Plus plans below for inspiration.

For comparison, below is a daily updating list of popular SIM-only plans from our database.

Optus prepaid plans that support international roaming

Optus Flex Plus plans are prepaid mobile plans, all of which support international roaming. Here’s a look at the most popular ones today.

Below is a snapshot of popular prepaid plans from our comparison engine.

Optus international roaming add-ons

There are $5 daily international roaming add-ons for Optus SIM-only and prepaid plans, though they do differ. For Optus SIM-only plans, it costs $5 per day for 5GB of data, plus unlimited standard talk and text. That’s usable as long as you’re inside the 100 of Zone 1-designated Optus international destinations. Note that if you use up all of that daily data, you’ll automatically be charged another $5 for 5GB more.

For Optus prepaid users, that $5 daily cost for the same destinations includes 1GB of data, 100 texts and 100 call minutes. Alternatively, buy the $35 Roaming pack, which comes with 7GB of data, 700 texts and 700 minutes for seven days.

If you’re an Optus SIM-only customer who’s not on a Choice Plus plan, the costs are different. Pay $10 per day for 1GB of data as well as unlimited talk and text in Zone 1 destinations. Note that certain Optus SIM-only plans have pay-as-you-go (PAYG) rates for using data, making and receiving calls, as well as sending and receiving texts while overseas. Similarly, if you’re outside one of the 100 Zone 1 destinations, there are PAYG rates for the same mobile functions.

How to use Optus international roaming

Optus customers should follow these steps to activate international roaming:

  1. Download and install the My Optus app.
  2. Open My Optus and sign in.
  3. Head to the ‘Services’ tab and select your Optus mobile service.
  4. Scroll to ‘Add-ons’ and activate Daily Roaming.

If you don’t have the Daily Roaming option, check for other international roaming packs in the My Optus ‘Add-ons’ tab or reach out to Optus for support.
