Companion is the latest in a string of stories about AI girlfriends not quite working out how the user expected. The film follows Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Jack Quaid) on a trip to the a secluded lake house with friends. Things take a turn in the idyllic location when an otherwise obedient Companion Android's programming abruptly shifts.

The horror movie (we use horror lightly here, it is arguably hilarious) hit Australian theatres on January 30th, 2025. For now you can't legally watch Companion at home, but the movie is showing at a range of cinemas across the country.

Where to stream Companion (2025) online in Australia

TBD

In Australia there is currently no way to stream Companion online. If you want to see it, you'll need to head to theatres.

When it does land on streaming it is hard to guess where it may end up, but our bet is on Binge and FoxtelNow, or maybe HBO Max. Companion is distributed by Warner Bros who homes most of their streaming content on Max in the US. Warner Bros also owns HBO, so it makes sense it would prioritise a streaming service of its own namesake. HBO Max is set to enter the Australian market in April 2025 however, so we're not quite sure how this will affect the current licensing agreements.

If Max doesn't swoop in in time Binge may luck out. Over here in Australia Foxtel (now owned by DAZN) has the licensing deal to a bunch of HBO shows. As the streaming arm Binge tends to get the biggest drawcards like The White Lotus, and Succession, so it isn't beyond the realm of possibility that Companion would join them on the small screen.

When did Companion come out in Australia?

Companion launched internationally on January 31, 2025, but because we live in the future that was actually January 30 in Australia. While preview screenings were available at select cinemas on January 29th, the majority of theatres officially released the film on the 30th.

Streaming dates are yet to be established, but when we know more we'll update this page.

What is Companion about?

On its surface Companion is a horror film about an AI android gone awry, but it is really about what it means to be human. The plot follows a group of friends and a misfit girlfriend at a lake house for the weekend. Iris (Sophie Thatcher) is hoping for acceptance from her partner Josh's (Jack Quaid) friends, but instead is met with animosity. When her programming seemingly malfunctions the reasons why are more obvious.

Throughout the story Iris shows kindness and humanity just as much as the real people show contempt and callousness. It is a constant tug of war erring between heart warming and ruthless, snapped with a good dose of comedic relief throughout.
