While it all started with Frederick Forsyth's 1971 novel of the same name, most probably know The Day of the Jackal from its previous film adaptations: the 1973 film starring Edward Fox and Michael Lonsdale, and the loosely adapted 1997 thriller The Jackal, starring Richard Gere and Bruce Willis. While the original work of fiction centred on the attempted assassination of  Charles de Gaulle by an enigmatic British hitman known only as The Jackal, modern adaptations have tasked the hitman with taking out more up-to-date targets. This is the case with this latest adaptation of The Day of the Jackal, starring Eddie Redmayne as the iconic hitman and Lashana Lynch as his pursuer. In place of the French president, Eddie Redmayne's Jackal is commissioned to assassinate one of the world's most high-profile tech moguls.

The first five episodes The Day of the Jackal (streaming on Peacock in the US) are available to stream now, with new episodes releasing over the next five weeks.

What is The Day of the Jackal about?

"Let me take a video of you saying you're going to kill the president."

In Sky Studios' adaptation of The Day of the Jackal, the titular hitman is played by Eddie Redmayne. Reimagined for a modern-day political setting, The Day of the Jackal TV series kicks off with the assassination of a far-right German politician which captures the attention of MI6 agent Bianca (Lashana Lynch.) When the Jackal is subsequently offered a $10 million dollar contract to eliminate a billionaire tech mogul before they release software intended to expose sources of dark money (undisclosed spending on election influence and interference) across the globe. The first five episodes have hit the mark and offer plenty of outrageous disguises for the Jackal.
