Android users who love that raw OS experience can breathe easy now that the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have officially been released in Australia. This year, Google has upped the price a smidge, but don't let that deter you. There are some decent upgrades in store for those looking to spend a little more on Google's premium smartphone offering this year. And if you'd rather not pay the primo price, there's always the formidable Pixel 7a waiting in the wings for a cool $749 RRP.

If you are down to commit to the Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, you've got two options: pay it off on a plan or purchase it outright (we've rounded up the best prices on Pixel 8 here.)

On this page, you'll find the very cheapest plans for the Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro available through Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.

If you've searched for the cheapest phone plan for any handset in Australia in the last ten years, it's more than likely you've been served up a Vodafone plan. And it's no different when it comes to the Pixel 8. Vodafone's Small Plan will net you a lot of data, unlimited calls and text, extra trade-in value (if you're already a Pixel user,) and a bonus gift. In this case, a bonus Pixel charging stand (valued at $119 RRP.)

Optus is next up with its 30GB plan, and Telstra costs a lot more, over $90 per month in this case. So you've got to be really desperate for that primo Telstra 5G coverage this year.

You get the drill. It doesn't take a detective to figure out what's best for Pixel 8 users is best for Pixel 8 Pro users. However, while the plans and monthly value might remain the same between the two handsets, the bonus offers differ slightly. If you order the Pixel 8 Pro through Vodafone, for example, you can net up $450 additional trade-in value on your old Pixel handset (in addition to the Pixel charging stand offered with the Pixel 8.).

Here's a round-up of the cheapest Google Pixel 8 Pro plans you can find in Australia:

Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro outright pricing

The Pixel 8 starts at $1,199 outright.

There's no way around it; this year's flagship smartphones are some of the most expensive yet. They still don't compare to the astronomical pricing of the iPhone 15, but they are pricier than they've ever been before. Whether you're going for the standard Pixel 8 or the premium Pixel 8 Pro, you can expect to pay more this year. Never mind, the Pixel 7a, a formidable budget alternative, is still selling for less than $800 in Australia.

Google Pixel 8 vs Pixel 8 Pro vs Pixel 7a

Is Google's latest worth the price hike?

It was just a matter of time before Google upped the launch price on its flagship smartphones. Considering how quickly (and heavily) the Pixel 7 was discounted after the release of the Pixel 7a, the company has made it clear that only the most loyal fans should pay full price for a brand-new Pixel smartphone. That's not to say there aren't a few reasons to upgrade, just that Google has officially fallen into line with Apple, offering an iterative upgrade to last year's model. Except this year, the iteration costs you a lot more.

Here's a complete breakdown of the major differences between the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 7a.
