From Alien Isolation to Yakuza 6, here’s the A-Z of games getting a frame-rate boost.
Over 70 Xbox games get next-gen FPS Boost
Early adopters of Microsoft’s new generation of consoles will be happy to hear that over 70 Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X games have received the FPS Boost treatment overnight, bringing the total to 97 FPS Boost-enabled titles.
The list of games is nearly identical across consoles except for a few standout titles that can’t access FPS Boost on Xbox Series S (Anthem, Battlefield 1 and V, and Dead Island to name a few). Out of those 70 games getting an FPS boost, 36 are available to download on Xbox Game Pass.
FPS stands for frames-per-second (also first-person shooter, which is a source of confusion).
FPS Boost is Microsoft's proprietary tech that multiplies the frame rate (frames-per-second) of existing Xbox One titles when played on the new Series S and X. Taking advantage of the new console hardware (and a 60/120hz capable TV), FPS Boost gives slightly older games a new lease on life with a higher frame rate, resulting in smoother animations and transitions. Some games are capped at 60fps while others can go as high as 120fps but often, a higher frame rate comes at the cost of resolution (e.g. 4K).
How to turn on FPS Boost on Xbox Series S/X
Firstly, you’ll need to make sure your console has the latest update installed (under Settings > System > Downloads and Updates). Once the update is installed and your console has been restarted, simply select the game you want to play, hit the Xbox button and select the game you’re playing. In the pop-up game menu, select ‘Manage game and add-ons’. On the next screen, select ‘Compatibility options’ and make sure the FPS Boost is checked. Once you’ve turned on FPS Boost, quit the game and launch it again so the settings can take effect.
