Amazon's coloured e-reader is finally available in Australia, and the only thing missing from it is 'u'. The local devices are the same as the ones launched abroad in 2024, even down to the americanised spelling of 'colour'. Of all the qualities of the device, its spelling doesn't really matter, but it is making my grammar checker grumpy this morning.

Spelling aside, the Colorsoft is similar to your usual Kindle experience, except it has a coloured e-ink screen. Using an oxide backplane, and a new light guide with nitride LEDs, the device promises to increase brightness, contrast, and retain clarity even when zooming in on images.

Both the Kindle Colorsoft and the Colorsoft Signature Edition are available from today, direct from Amazon or in store at JB Hi-Fi and Officeworks. The entry level model retails for $399 with 16GB of storage, while the Signature Edition has 32GB of storage, wireless charging, and will set you back $449. Both devices charge by USB-C, are waterproof, and come with up to 8 weeks of battery life.

"We're delighted to bring Kindle Colorsoft to our customers in Australia," said Jacqui Corbett, Amazon Devices Country Manager, Australia and New Zealand. "This is a significant milestone for Kindle locally, offering readers the perfect blend of our beloved e-reader experience with high-contrast colour capabilities."
