JB Hi-Fi Phone plans: Are they worth it?

If you've walked into a JB Hi-Fi recently, you might have noticed the retailer sells both its own prepaid SIMs and upfront mobile plans. These plans offer coverage on par with some of Australia's best SIM-only mobile plans and often come bundled with a generous gift card that can be used to pay for the cost of a new handset. 

The less good news is there's a catch or two to getting your mobile service from the same place you get your gadgets and robovacs. Here's everything you need to know about JB Hi-Fi phone plans in Australia, including how they work, whether they're good value, how they compare to the competition, and more.

At the time of writing, JB Hi-Fi currently sells a total of three upfront mobile plans. You can see a breakdown of what each has to offer in the table below.

The most eye-catching inclusion is the fact that all but JB Hi-Fi's cheapest mobile plan come with some sort of gift voucher. Depending on which plan you go for, the gift voucher you get for signing up might be able to cover some or even most of the cost associated with buying a new phone through the retailer.

What's more, since JB Hi-Fi sells a lot more devices than Telstra does, you may be able to find something that suits your situation better than the usual Samsung or Apple-branded smartphone might. You might be able to find it on sale and save money that way as well.

This ability to pair your phone plan with a heavily discounted device is the main reason to consider signing up for a JB Hi-Fi phone plan in 2025. Even so, there are a few catches to be found in the CIS (critical information summary) for the plans seen above.

Those considering a JB Hi-Fi mobile plan will want to keep in mind that the retailer is reselling Telstra mobile plans, rather than acting as an MVNO for the Telstra mobile network. 

This setup has some cons to it, but the biggest upside if you're able to get the same level of 4G and 5G mobile coverage you would with Telstra. In other words, JB Hi-Fi's mobile and phone plans come with access to the full Telstra network, rather than the smaller wholesale network used by every Telstra MVNO bar Boost Mobile. 

But although these are just Telstra plans with a different brand plastered over the top, it's worth noting that signing up via your local JB Hi-Fi store, rather than a Telstra retail outlet, does mean missing out on a few perks. For instance, those on a JB Hi-Fi phone plan can't earn Telstra points and the slowest of the three plans comes with a 100Mbps speed limit.

Although JB Hi-Fi's mobile plans are a little more affordable than their Telstra counterparts and often come with the possibility of being able to snag a new smartphone at a discount, they are far from the best-value option if you're looking for access to the biggest mobile network in Australia on a budget.

In addition to the upfront plans mentioned earlier, JB Hi-Fi also sells a single prepaid plan for those who prefer to take things one month at a time.

Priced at $39 with a 30-day expiry, this plan comes with unlimited local talk and text, 30GB of data, 4G and 5G coverage with speeds capped at 150Mbps, 300 minutes of international calls to selected destinations and 100 SMS/MMS messages to any destination, plus 200GB data rollover if you renew on time.

As with JB Hi-Fi's other mobile plans, this SIM comes with access to the full Telstra network.

On paper, the sheer amount of gigabytes here (along with the promise of a free JB Hi-Fi gift card) may make these plans a compelling alternative to the Telstra plans on this page for some Aussies.

However, there are a few catches those considering signing up for a JB Hi-Fi phone plan will want to consider first. The biggest of these is that the plans themselves include a lock-in contract. Once you sign up, you can't change providers if you're unhappy with the service or find a better deal without incurring a financial penalty.

As per the critical information summary, "If you cancel or move to a lower cost plan then you'll need to pay a Voucher Repayment Fee pro-rated against the remaining months of your plan’s minimum term."

Although JB Hi-Fi's mobile plans are a little more affordable than their Telstra counterparts and often come with the possibility of being able to snag a new smartphone at a discount, they are far from the best-value option if you're looking for a new mobile provider in 2025.
