1. How to cancel Xfinity Internet
Many customers decide to cancel Xfinity Internet for practical reasons; not because the service doesn’t work, but because something needs to change.
Here are the most common scenarios that prompt a customer to take their business elsewhere:
- Price increases after a promotional period
- Slower speeds than expected
- Frequent outages
- Better options becoming available in the area
- Moving to a new home
- Switching to a fiber provider
- Bundling services with another service provider
Xfinity allows customers to cancel their internet service through several channels, but the experience and timeline may vary depending upon your location and whether you’re under a contract. In most cases, Xfinity service cancellations are relatively easy and straightforward, involving a brief conversation with a customer service representative (versus an online confirmation).
How to cancel Xfinity Internet by phone
Calling customer support is usually the fastest and most direct way to cancel. You’ll often be routed to speak with an agent in the retention department. This method allows you to set a specific cancellation date, ask questions about your final bill, and confirm equipment return requirements. In some cases, the rep may be authorized to rework your plan to cut costs and meet your needs.
Xfinity’s main customer service number is 1-800-XFINITY (1-800-934-6489).
How to cancel Xfinity Internet via online chat
Customers may opt to initiate the cancellation process through Xfinity’s online (text) chat or via the app’s account support tools. Availability varies, and in many cases, the chat agents will still escalate the request to a phone call before the cancellation is finalized. Chat can be useful for gathering information or starting the process, but a phone call may still be necessary. Also, this avenue may not result in an immediate same-day cancellation.
How to cancel Xfinity Internet at an Xfinity store
Customers can visit a local Xfinity store to cancel their services in person. This option is helpful if you want to return equipment at the same time or prefer face-to-face assistance. Keep in mind that not all stores process cancellations instantly, so it’s still important to confirm your final service end date and billing details before you go.
Before canceling, it helps to compare alternatives so you don’t jump ship only to find that there’s no other ship to jump to! Depending on your zip code, you may have access to faster fiber internet services, simpler pricing, or a better (lower) introductory rate. What to have ready before you cancel
To avoid a delay in cancellation, you’ll want to have the following information available:
- Your account details
- Your address
- Your account PIN or security verification details
- Your preferred cancellation date (especially important if you’re moving!)
Having this information ready can help the process go more smoothly and reduce back-and-forth with customer support.
2. How do I cancel my Xfinity TV service?
If you want to cancel Xfinity TV online, you’ll have to sign in to your account and schedule to speak with a representative. We recommend you skip the scheduling and just call a representative, because you can get your service canceled much quicker.
Talk to Retention and be firm and friendly. Let them know your reasoning of why you’d like to cancel and set up your final billing date/ last day of service. Ask the rep to send you a confirmation email.
Giving back Xfinity’s belongings is essential at the end of a relationship. Don’t forget to return your TV boxes, remotes, and anything else you might have rented. Take photos of the equipment and serial numbers before sending them on their way.
Am I eligible to cancel my Xfinity TV service?
Anyone is eligible to cancel. You’ll just have a few more hoops to jump through if you have a contract.
If you don’t have a contract, you’re free to cancel whenever you’d like (but we’re not saying it’s an easy break).
But if you have a one-year contract with Xfinity, you’ll have to face the dreaded cancellation fee. This means you’ll have to pay $10 per month remaining on your contract.
Sometimes this isn’t such a bad price to pay, especially since you could save more money by paying the early termination fee instead of next month’s bill.
You also want a good excuse ready to go (so they don’t fight you too much on it).
You might already have a solid reason because, of course, you wouldn’t be reading this right now if you weren’t already thinking about cutting the cord.
You might be canceling because you’re moving to an area where Xfinity isn’t available, for example.
But if you want to cancel because it doesn’t fit the budget at the moment, or you want to switch over to a live TV streaming service (we don’t blame you), consider these questions to create that good excuse:
- Did Xfinity fail to provide the services it promised?
- Was your Xfinity cable out for long periods of time?
- Were channels blocked that you were paying for?
- Were there unexpected fee increases?
If you just want to transfer your service to your new home, follow Xfinity’s steps.
If you're fed up with your equipment and you’re having troubles with it, you can start a return by logging in or return it to your local Xfinity store.
If you’re wondering if you can keep your Xfinity Internet service while canceling your TV service, we’re here to tell you that you can!
You may not get as good of an internet deal if you cancel your bundle, but you’ll still save money because you won’t have to pay for a cable TV service you don’t want anymore.
How can I cancel Xfinity TV over the phone?
If you skipped to this part because you want to know exactly how to cancel Xfinity TV over the phone, make sure you have your reasons for canceling ready. Get your firm and friendly hat on for this breakup call.
To start the phone canceling process, call 1-800-XFINITY (1-800-934-6489).
When you call, answer the menu by saying “cancel service.” Once you get through to someone, ask if you’re speaking with Retention. If they’re not Retention, let them know you’d like to be transferred.
Let Retention know you’d like to cancel Xfinity TV, let them know of your reasonings, and get past the part where they try to get you to stay. Face it, you’re hard to let go of. Break it to them nicely.
Be prepared to be offered lots of free goodies (but maybe this is your intention). They’ll offer to cut down your monthly bill or offer a premium channel like HBO for free.
Again, be nice and firm and let the representative know that you’d like to cancel today. Make sure you leave that phone call with a scheduled cancellation day and a plan for your equipment to be sent back to Xfinity. Get your representative’s name and ID number just in case anything goes wrong.
Or if you’d like to go to an Xfinity store and talk face-to-face, find your nearest Xfinity store, and you can take your equipment with you.
3. How to cancel Xfinity Mobile services
Canceling Xfinity Mobile works a little differently than canceling Xfinity Internet or TV. Because it’s a wireless service, the order of steps matters—especially if you want to keep your phone number or use your device with another carrier.
1. Decide whether you want to keep your phone number
If you plan to switch carriers and keep your number, don’t cancel your Xfinity Mobile service first. Instead, begin by porting your number to the new provider. Once the transfer is complete, Xfinity automatically cancels the line. Canceling before the port-over process finishes can stop the transfer and cause you to lose your number.
Your new carrier will request a temporary Xfinity Mobile security (port-out) PIN, which you can generate through your Xfinity Mobile account online or in the Xfinity app. This PIN expires after 24 hours.
2. Check if your phone is eligible to be unlocked
If you want to bring your phone to another carrier, you need to unlock it. In most cases, devices must be fully paid off and meet Xfinity Mobile’s eligibility requirements before they can be unlocked.
If you’re still making device payments:
- You can pay off the device in full, or
- Continue monthly payments as long as you keep another Xfinity service (Internet, TV, or Voice).
If you cancel all Xfinity services, the remaining device balance is due on your final bill.
3. Cancel service if you’re not transferring your number
If you’re not porting your number, you need to contact Xfinity Mobile to cancel. You can do this by phone, chat, or at an Xfinity Retail Store. Xfinity doesn’t currently offer a guaranteed one-click, self-serve cancellation option.
4. Understand how final billing works
Billing depends on your plan:
- Unlimited data plans: Charges are prorated when a line is canceled.
- By the Gig plans: Charges are not prorated.
Any remaining device payments or outstanding charges will appear on your final statement.
5. Confirm cancellation
Once your line is canceled or transferred, review your final bill and keep confirmation details for your records. If all Xfinity Mobile lines are canceled, you lose access to the Xfinity Mobile account section in the app and online.
If you’re switching carriers, it’s a good time to compare plans. You can explore the best cell phone plans available now here.
How to transfer Xfinity service when moving
If you’re moving, transferring your Xfinity Internet or TV service to a new address can usually be done entirely online and it’s usually easier and less costly than canceling.
Move your service
- You can start the process by signing in to your Xfinity account and visiting “xfinity.com/moving” or by selecting “Move or Transfer Service” in the Xfinity app.
- After entering your new address, Xfinity will confirm whether service is available at the new location.
- Then, you’ll choose whether you wish to keep your current plan or switch to a different one. This is also the point in the process where you can set a stop date at the old address, and schedule when service should begin at the new location.
- Next, you’ll select an installation option based on your plan and equipment. Xfinity may offer self-installation, Self Install Plus, or professional installation, depending upon the situation. If a technician visit is required, you’ll be prompted to choose a date and time window.
- Before submitting, you’ll review your move details, including addresses, equipment being transferred, any plan changes, and charges due.
- Once you accept the terms, Xfinity provides a confirmation page and sends a confirmation email.
Transfer your service
Transferring service often helps customers avoid early termination fees, especially if they’re under a contract and Xfinity is available at the new address. However, pricing, promotions, and installation fees can change after a move. If Xfinity doesn’t serve your new location, you’ll need to discuss your cancellation options. Generally speaking, you can usually retain Xfinity Mobile service, even if you move outside Xfinity’s Internet or TV service area, but additional mobile charges and restrictions may be applied.
How to put your Xfinity account on seasonal hold (pause)
Xfinity offers a Seasonal Convenience Plan that lets some residential customers temporarily pause full service instead of canceling. This option is designed for people who will be away from their service address for an extended period of time, making these pauses great for seasonal residents or “snowbirds,” temporary relocations, and long vacations.
WIth a seasonal pause for Xfinity services, your account remains active and you will not be billed for full service. Seasonal holds typically last anywhere from 2 to 6 months and customers have the ability to initiate a pause twice per calendar year.
Availability does vary according to your zip code and by the precise service that you’re seeking to pause (internet, mobile, and TV).
During a seasonal pause, your Xfinity services may be reduced to limited versions rather than fully shut off, and pricing and it’s important to remember that features are subject to change at any time. Unpausing services is easy and you don’t need to worry about scheduling a technician visit.
Overall, it’s a great option for saving money, as the process is relatively fast and straightforward. You won’t need to worry about equipment returns, fees, or the hassle of restarting with a new service when you return to the property.
It’s important to note that seasonal Xfinity service pause isn’t available for all services and all zip codes, so you’ll want to confirm availability through your Xfinity account or by speaking with a customer support agent.
How to pause your Xfinity Mobile services with a military deployment suspension
Xfinity offers an additional suspension option for active-duty military members, but this applies only to Xfinity Mobile, and not their internet or TV service.
Eligible service members can suspend mobile service for up to 39 months if they receive deployment orders outside the U.S. for more than 90 days or a permanent change of duty station within the U.S., as long as the orders were issued after signing up for Xfinity Mobile.
While suspended, you won’t get charged for service fees on the mobile line, though device payment plans must be paid off or you may opt to continue during deployment. Suspension requires submitting official military orders at an Xfinity Retail Store or by calling Xfinity Mobile support.
Xfinity Mobile service must be reinstated before the 39-month limit, or you risk getting disconnected or you could lose your phone number.
How do I return my Xfinity equipment?
First of all, make sure you ask the representative what equipment they claim to have on file that is in your possession. Because trust us, they will count every single piece of equipment upon receiving.
Next, you can return your equipment by taking it to your nearest Xfinity store, or while you’re talking to a representative on the phone, ask if they can give you a prepaid box or label to send back through UPS.
Before you drop your equipment off at the Xfinity store, take a picture of everything, including the serial number, on the counter. If you take the equipment to UPS, take a picture of everything in the box and get a receipt.
You’ll need all of the evidence. You could even write down the ID number and name of the rep you spoke to be extra cautious.
And in a couple of weeks, give Xfinity a call to make sure they received all of your items and that the service is completely canceled. The last thing you want is a charge on your bill the following month and in a fierce attempt to get your money back.
Xfinity cancellation fees and final bill
When you cancel Xfinity Internet or TV service, the final bill may include early termination fees if you’re under a contract, along with any remaining equipment charges or balances.
Early termination fees typically vary according to how much time is left on your contractual service agreement. The amount may also vary by plan and any promotions that were applied. As a result, the exact termination fee amount will vary from customer to customer.
For billing, Xfinity generally bills Internet and TV service through the end of your current billing cycle rather than prorating unused days. Your final statement may also include taxes, surcharges, or unreturned equipment fees.
Xfinity’s pricing, contract terms, and billing policies can change, so it’s important to confirm all fees and your final service date with the customer service representative before the cancellation process is complete.
Common Xfinity Fees After Cancellation
To create this guide, I reviewed Xfinity’s website for official customer support documentation and policies for canceling, transferring, and pausing service across internet, TV, and mobile. I walked through my Xfinity online account tools and the app, documented the steps required for cancellation, service pauses, and service transfers.

How to cancel Xfinity FAQ
You can continue to use your Xfinity email address even after you cancel your services. You just need to have logged into the account within the 90 days before your disconnect date. Then, moving forward, you’ll need to sign in at least once every nine months to keep the account active. If the account remains inactive for more than nine months, there’s a risk that access may be removed.
If you disconnect all Xfinity services, you can still access any TV shows or movies you previously purchased through Xfinity Stream on the web or in the Xfinity Stream app. You must sign in with your primary Xfinity ID and password to view the purchased content.
