The iPhone 16 range has just supplanted by the iPhone 17, but it still has a lot to offer – especially now the official RRP has dropped. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus are still available on plans from Optus, Vodafone and Telstra, but the 16 Pro and Pro Max have been discontinued by Apple. Telstra still has a few on plans for now, but don't expect that to last.

Despite being last year's news, these phones can still compete with the some of the best when it comes to performance and cameras, plus Apple will continue to support the iPhone 16 range with security updates until 2030. We'll take you through what each iPhone 16 model has to offer, as well as pricing, plans, and the basics of Apple Intelligence, which you might not be familiar with if your current iPhone is an iPhone 14 or older.

Apple iPhone 16

The iPhone 16 range was already a fair price when it launched – cheaper even than the iPhone 15 series was. Now, it's even cheaper, thanks to being knocked off the top spot by the iPhone 17. These phones are still good value for money, but Apple is well aware of that, so don't expect a bargain bin win.

The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max didn't get updated RRPs because they've been discontinued. And the same goes for the larger storage variants of the standard iPhone 16 and the 16 Plus – these are now only continuing in 128GB for the standard model, with the Plus coming in 128GB or 256GB.

Here's a quick look at the new official iPhone 16 pricing from Apple in 2025.

Sticking around for a while

The 16 and 16 Plus are still around and should continue to be available until around September 2026. The Plus is essentially just an upscaled version of the standard iPhone 16, with a 6.7-inch display vs. the 6.1 inches of the smaller model.

Here's an overview of the features of both models:

  • A18 chipset: Thanks to the fact that Apple (still) wants to put Apple Intelligence and the revamped Siri in front of as many iPhone users as possible, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus pack an A18 chipset to support all that AI processing. This is still a decent bit of hardware, even by 2025 standards, so you should still get a nice, smooth user experience.
  • Action Button: The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus were the first of the non-Pro iPhones to get Apple's Action button. This is a side-mounted customisable button that can be used as a silent toggle, a flashlight button, for voice memo recordings, or matched up with an accessibility feature or shortcut.
  • Camera Control: The Camera Control button is a side-mounted button under the lock button, which you won't find on earlier models. It's a touch-sensitive button that launches the camera and lets you adjust image settings (like zoom) by swiping it.
  • 48MP Fusion camera: The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus have identical cameras. The main lens includes both a 48MP wide angle camera and a 2x telephoto option, essentially a lite version of the 16 Pro's and Pro Max's third lens crammed into the main camera. For the few Apple Vision Pro owners among us, spatial photos and video are also available in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.

The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max have been discontinued, but they're still fantastic phones if you can find one for a decent price. Their cameras are better than just about anything but the best flagships of 2025, and they'll continue to receive security updates until 2030 – so there's still plenty of life left in them.

Here's an overview of the features of both the iPhone 16 Pro handsets:

  • Bigger displays: For the first time since 2020, the iPhone got bigger displays on the 16 Pro and Pro Max. The iPhone 16 Pro sports a 6.3-inch display, up from 6.1-inch with previous models. The iPhone 16 Pro Max rocks a 6.9-inch screen, up from 6.7-inches. Otherwise, it's the same Super Retina XDR OLED Display many Apple fans know and love. The ProMotion 120Hz refresh rate for silky smooth animations is still a Pro exclusive with the iPhone 16 range, as is the Always-On Display.
  • Camera Control: The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max have the same Camera Control button as the standard 16 and 16 Plus. It's a side-mounted, touch-sensitive button that launches the camera and lets you adjust image settings (like zoom) by swiping it.
  • 48MP Ultrawide: The camera on both models is the same – which is a good thing because it's great. The main camera has a 48MP ultrawide lens, capable of better low-light snaps.
  • Bigger, better batteries: Aided by the efficiencies afforded by the A18 Pro chip, Apple claims the iPhone 16 Pro Max is capable of 33 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 16 Pro can manage an admirable 27 hours. This was a decent upgrade over previous models and is still good compared to modern flagships.
  • A18 Pro chip: The A18 Pro is even more powerful than the A18 sported by the non-Pro models. Apple says the A18 Pro clocks a 20% increase in GPU speed over previous models, improved ray tracing performance (for better lighting and shadows in games) and boasts a 20% bump in energy efficiency (which should contribute to the additional battery life.) The CPU is also 20% faster than last year's iPhone 15 Pro Max.

iPhone 16 and 16 Plus plans

You can still grab iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max plans from Telstra (Optus has plans listed, but all models are out of stock and Apple has discontinued the handsets). That said, stock is limited and Telstra is already out of some storage options. Obviously, these phones will only become rarer as stocks dwindle, so don't sleep on it if you're keen on picking one up. That said, have a think about whether you're happy to pay the premium for a Telstra mobile plan on top of your iPhone's price tag or if you'd prefer to try your luck at finding one from a retailer and signing up to a SIM-only plan separately.

iPhone 16 and 16 Pro AI

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence was introduced with iOS 18 and brought with it new generative AI writing and drawing tools, as well as Genmoji – an AI-driven emoji system that lets you create unique emoji reactions. Most importantly, Apple Intelligence skilled up Apple’s voice assistant Siri with text-based commands (when you don’t feel like speaking to Siri,) rich language understanding that allows for flubs and interruptions, and new ways to interact across apps (like forwarding a work email draft to your close friends for a second opinion).

Apple Intelligence is available on all four iPhone 16 models, as well as the newest iPhone 17 line, the iPhone Air, the iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
