Cell phone plans can get pricey, but getting a family plan discount can ensure affordable rates for months to come.

Right now, T-Mobile is offering one of the best family plan promos in the market. The 5G wireless carrier recently announced its Family Freedom initiative, a nifty limited-time offer that pays up to $3,200 to families who want to break free of expensive phone contracts.

Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about the initiative.

What you need to know

T-Mobile’s Family Freedom helps your family save big in three ways:

  1. Helps pay off smartphone balances and early termination fees from your previous provider, up to $3,200 via a virtual prepaid card (up to four lines, with up to $800 per line).
  2. Provides monthly discounts starting from $10 to families with multiple lines on an account.
  3. Offers four iPhone 16 devices on T-Mobile’s dime.

This offer is a handy solution if your family is trapped paying for an outdated phone and an expensive monthly plan.

Besides the great family deals, switching to T-Mobile is a great idea because of its superior connection quality. T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G network wins awards across the board for its strong mobile experience compared to its competitors, AT&T and Verizon. It’s also ranked as the Global Winner for the Opensignal Global Awards 2025 for download speed experience.

Who counts as family?
Bullhorn

T-Mobile family cell phone plans don’t have to include actual family members. As long as you pay the one bill through the account holder, there are no restrictions on adding relatives or friends to your plan. Just make sure you trust the people on your plan to pay their fair share every month to the account holder!

Which T-Mobile cell phone plans are eligible for Family Freedom?

You can take your pick—most postpaid T-Mobile cell phone plans are eligible for Family Freedom as long as you get two lines on one account. To get the maximum payout of $3,200 and four iPhone 16 devices (worth $829.99 each), you need to add four lines on a family plan. This costs between $100 to $215 monthly and includes unlimited talk, text, and data.

If you want the most affordable plan, sign up for T-Mobile Essentials. If you want entertainment and roaming perks, you can level up to the T-Mobile Experience plans.

T-Mobile Essentials is a basic plan with everything you need to stay connected. The plan (when you select 4 Line Offer) costs $100 monthly for four lines, so $25 per line. A single line on the T-Mobile Essentials plan costs $60, so you save $35 per line when you go in together with your family on a plan.

The plan includes these features:

  • 50GB premium data
  • Unlimited 3G hotspot
  • Unlimited talk, text, and data (128Kbps) in Canada and Mexico
  • Calling for $0.25 per minute in 215+ destinations
  • Unlimited international texting from the U.S.

T-Mobile Experience More costs $170 monthly for four lines, which splits up to $42.50 per person. Experience More includes all the basics plus extra perks:

  • 5-Year Price Guarantee
  • Phone upgrades every two years
  • Unlimited premium data
  • Netflix Standard with ads and Apple TV+
  • 60GB high-speed mobile hotspot data
  • Unlimited text and 15GB high-speed data in Canada and Mexico
  • Unlimited text and 5GB high-speed data in 215+ destinations

T-Mobile Experience Beyond costs $215 monthly for four lines, which splits up to $53.75 each. The price per person on an Experience Beyond plan is still cheaper than a single line on the Essentials plan. So if you want a premium experience for the price of a cheap cell phone plan, take a look at what you get with Experience Beyond:

  • 5-Year Price Guarantee
  • Phone upgrades every year
  • Unlimited premium data
  • Netflix Standard with ads, Apple TV+, and Hulu (With Ads)
  • Unlimited mobile hotspot data
  • Unlimited text and 30GB high-speed data in Canada and Mexico
  • Unlimited text and 15GB high-speed data in 215+ destinations

How do I get T-Mobile Family Freedom?

To be eligible for T-Mobile’s Family Freedom, follow the steps below:

1. Sign up for any T-Mobile unlimited cell phone plan. Make sure to add two or more lines to your account.

2. Trade in your family’s financed smart phones for new phones. You can do this either using T-Mobile’s online shop or by going in person to a T-Mobile brick-and-mortar store. You need to have your previous device and payment plan for at least 90 days and be in good standing from an eligible carrier. T-Mobile offers a variety of discounts on new phones, including four free iPhone 16s when you trade in four phones (via 24 bill credits).

Eligible carriers include:

  • AT&T
  • Claro
  • C Spire
  • Liberty
  • Spectrum
  • UScellular
  • Verizon
  • Xfinity

3. Port-in your phone number. You can do this in store while you trade in your phone, or call +1-800-T-MOBILE.

4. Submit your request for reimbursement. Head to the T-Mobile Redemption Center website within 30 days of your account activation. Then upload a PDF of your most recent bill from your previous carrier that includes this information:

  • Your phone number that you ported into T-Mobile
  • Your phone make and model
  • Remaining device payment balance
  • Phone financing start date (which shows a minimum of 90 days with your previous carrier and payments made)
  • Early termination fee, if applicable

After you submit, you receive your Virtual Prepaid Mastercard loaded with the funds to cover your early termination fee and pay off your remaining device balance, up to $800 per person. This can take up to 15 days, and the card expires in six months. You can then use this Mastercard to pay back your previous carrier.

Is a T-Mobile family plan worth it?

A T-Mobile family plan is definitely worth it. It saves you money every month, even without Family Freedom but especially with one. When looking at the price per line, you can save nearly 60% on your bill with a T-Mobile family plan with four lines compared to an individual plan.
