Cox Mobile Review: I Found a Cheaper Way To Get Verizon Coverage for Cox Internet Customers

On top of that, there are many reasons Cox Mobile could be a great cell phone service for you. For starters, it operates on Verizon’s super reliable network … but costs $50 less per month.
I see Cox Mobile fitting a specific type of person: It’s perfect for low-data users who frequently connect to Wi-Fi and who want the reliability of Verizon’s network (without its high cost). Plus, there are advantages to bundling it with your Cox Internet. If you’re already a Cox Internet customer, it will lower your internet bill and also give you free unlimited data on your internet plan (otherwise, you’d have to pay $50 per month for unlimited data for your Cox Internet plan). Overall, bundling with Cox Mobile makes your Cox Internet plan a better deal.

You should definitely consider getting a Cox Mobile line if you’re already a Cox Internet customer because you’ll get a cheap cell phone plan that runs over Verizon’s expansive network (known for its reliability in urban and even rural areas) … without the Verizon prices.

Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect from a Cox Mobile cell phone plan:

Cox offers two mobile plans. When you first land on its site, you might grab your pearls and gasp because the Pay As You Gig Plan for 1GB starts at $65 per month and the Gig Unlimited Plan starts at $95 per month. Prepaid plans should NEVER be this expensive. For example, Tello Mobile starts at $5 per month, and Spectrum Mobile starts at $20 per month. It took me a moment to realize that the prices you see are the combined price for Cox Internet AND Cox Mobile. Phew.
If you want to add multiple people to a Cox Mobile plan and also mix and match plans. You can drop the price of your Gig Unlimited plan from $45 to as low as $30 for four or more lines. Unfortunately, the Pay As You Gig plan is always $15 per line regardless of the amount of lines you add.
Pay for any Cox Internet plan to get access to Cox Mobile.
Let’s talk about Cox Internet since you need to pay for one of its plans before you can get a Cox Mobile line. Cox Internet offers five internet plans ranging from 100Mbps to 2Gig speeds and ranging from $30 to $110 per month. For typical internet activities—streaming, gaming, working from home—our team at Reviews.org typically recommends speeds in the range of 300Mbps or 500Mbps.
Important note about Cox Internet prices: They vary from region to region. So while I have transcribed what is currently available on Cox’s site, I have tried to checkout with different plans in different addresses … and found different prices.

The good news is that if you get the Cox Internet Fast Plan for 300Mbps, you can get it for $45 per month (typically $70 per month in some areas) with a Cox Mobile Gig Unlimited line.
The best part? If you want to leave Cox Internet behind, you can still keep your Cox Mobile line for $45 per month. That’s $20 less than Verizon’s cheapest cell phone line!
Cox Mobile’s Pay as You Gig plan is perfect for the light data user—but don’t use more than 3GB.
The Pay as You Gig plan starts at $15 per month per line, and includes 1GB of data (to start). If you are mostly connected to Wi-Fi, then this price is an excellent value (it’s $5 cheaper than Xfinity Mobile and Spectrum Mobile’s similar 1GB plans).
For every GB, you pay an extra $15. However, I have to admit that Spectrum Mobile might have the upper hand here as it only charges you $5 per extra GB (vs. Xfinity Mobile, which charges an extra $20 for each GB). Cox Mobile’s Pay As You Gig Plan can get expensive quickly, so if you find yourself paying for even an extra 2GB, upgrade your plan to the Gig Unlimited as you’ll be paying the same price of $45 for a whole 20GB instead of 3GB.
Money-saving tip!
If you bundle the Gig Unlimited mobile line and the 500Mbps internet plan (or higher), you can access free unlimited data on your Cox home internet. Of note, Cox Internet does have a 1.25TB data cap. So if you are a heavy internet user, you’ll want to snag this combination and never worry about overage fees.

Cox Mobile offers a surprising amount of deals for a prepaid carrier. While you won’t find free streaming subscriptions, you can find a ton of phone deals—new devices, pre-owned phones, trade-in deals, and phone protection plans. Find all offers on Cox Mobile’s site.

Cox Mobile operates on Verizon’s network, known for its extensive 4G LTE coverage, especially in rural areas. According to the OpenSignal June 2025 report, Verizon customers can get a connection in the “most places.” In our deep dive of best cell phone coverage, we awarded Verizon with the best 4G LTE and 5G coverage. So with Verizon, you’ll likely encounter less dead zones on this network.
However, Cox Mobile is a Verizon MVNO—a prepaid mobile carrier that operates on Verizon’s network. Compared to an actual Verizon customer, Cox Mobile customers can experience slower data if they’re in crowded public areas or during times of typical network congestion (like during your commute at rush hour). As a prepaid customer myself (Mint Mobile for me!), I actually haven’t experienced much deprioritization. So while it can happen, it’s not always the case.
But like I mentioned before, Cox Mobile is best for lighter-data users who mostly connect to Wi-Fi and don’t rely on their phones constantly while traveling. There’s a good chance that paying $45 for Cox Mobile’s most expensive line (instead of $65 for Verizon’s cheapest line) is definitely worthwhile for those who don’t need the constantly fast speeds and the big monthly bills.

Whether you use less data or more data, Cox Mobile will probably be able to cater to what you need. You can get as low as 1GB (and pay for each extra GB) on its most basic plan to 20GB on its premium plan. However, each plan functions differently when it comes to using data.
Cox Mobile has hard and soft data caps:
- Pay As You Gig Plan: This mobile plan has a hard cap meaning that once you use 1GB, you don’t have any data until you pay for the next 1GB of data. You are not automatically charged until you use an additional GB. While you can pay up to 5GB on this plan, I highly recommend you upgrade your plan to the Gig Unlimited Plan if you go even to 3GB. It’s the same price!
- Gig Unlimited: This mobile plan has a soft cap meaning that once you exceed the 20GB of high-speed data, you will still have access to data … but at painfully slow speeds of 1.5Mbps download and 750Kbps upload speeds. You don’t have the option of data top-ups throughout the month (unlike other prepaid mobile plans).
As for hotspot data: Cox Mobile includes mobile hotspot data only on its Gig Unlimited plan. Again, if you think you are someone who will need to rely on your hotspot data, Cox Mobile may not be the right prepaid carrier for you.
Cox Mobile Wi-Fi hotspots
One of the best features of Cox Mobile is that you don’t have to use data when you’re out and about. Cox Mobile offers four million Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the United States that allow you to save your plan’s data.
Did you know?
If you connect to a Wi-Fi network or a Cox Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot when you’re away from your home Wi-Fi, you won’t use any of the data allotment on your mobile plan. As long as you’re connected to a Cox Mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, you can use as much data as you want without burning through your plan’s data. When in doubt, connect to Wi-Fi when out and about!
Customer service

The online Cox chat agents were especially unhelpful. The few times I opened the chat to ask basic questions about getting started, they either ended the chat immediately upon realizing I wouldn’t be activating service or gave me frustratingly vague answers. If you’re not already a Cox Internet customer or you’re not ready to buy a Cox Internet plan, skip the online chat.

However, when I called in, I got a real person almost immediately. From the two times I called in, the Cox reps were very helpful, knowledgeable, and patient with my questions. They answered everything well, and didn’t try to upsell me at any point in the conversation. It felt unscripted, and for that, they deserve my praise.

Quality of Cox Mobile customer service
Chat service/AI chatbot: The sales agents were semi-helpful in answering basic questions about service. But the moment it was clear that I wasn’t purchasing internet, they ended the chat. If you’re a new customer, I wouldn’t suggest chatting unless you are ready to purchase Cox Internet.
Calling customer service at +1-866-961-0027: The Cox representatives were extremely helpful over the phone, and did not upsell me on anything as they answered my questions.

For Cox Internet customers who prefer Verizon coverage for their cell phone plan, then Cox Mobile is a great choice for you. By bundling Cox Internet and Cox Mobile, you get a discount on your internet bill, access to free unlimited data on your internet plan, and even get a price lock on your internet plan for two to five years. For extra financial peace of mind and simplified billing, bundling is worth it.
