If you’re able to switch internet providers, January is a great time to score some cash back or bonuses like Disney+. A handful of nationwide internet service providers (ISPs), like Spectrum, Optimum, and AT&T, are offering Visa prepaid cards and streaming service subscriptions for new customers.

If you don’t have a new ISP to switch to, it doesn’t hurt to call your current provider and ask if they have any deals for you. We’ve done this with Xfinity in the past and ended up with freebies and discounted bundles despite already being a customer.

Is Spectrum Internet good?

Spectrum’s cable internet service is a decent pick, and its up to 200 Mbps and up to 400 Mbps plans (wireless speeds may vary) offer the best value. All of its plans come with no contracts and no data caps, which are huge perks for anyone who might move in the near future. Or for those who need unlimited data to juggle Zoom calls throughout the day.

On the other hand, we’re not fans of its Gig plan price, which includes a whopping $100+ installation fee on top of the over-$100 monthly cost.

Pro Heading
Pros
Pro Bullet No contracts
Pro Bullet Unlimited data
Pro Bullet Decent prices for most plans
Con Heading
Cons
Con Bullet Lackluster customer service
Con Bullet Potentially slow download speeds
Con Bullet Expensive Gig plan

Is Optimum internet good?

Optimum is well-known for its cable internet service that serves the northeastern US, and recently it added fiber internet to the lineup as well. Both connection types come with unlimited data and fairly competitive prices for the region, making it a good value choice for most folks who stream, game, and work from home.

The catch? Altice, Optimum’s parent company, is known for changes that aren’t customer-friendly. Just last year (2021), it announced a severe drop in upload speeds for Optimum’s cable internet service to 5–36 Mbps.1 (Previously, upload speeds were 35–50 Mbps.)

This change to upload speeds is a major hit to how well work-from-home necessities like Zoom perform. So we advise keeping an eye out for any changes if you sign up for Optimum.

Pros
Pro Bullet Good-value prices on cable and fiber internet
Pro Bullet Unlimited data
Pro Bullet No contracts required

Is CenturyLink internet good?

We’re big fans of CenturyLink’s commitment to no price hikes while you’re subscribed to one of its internet plans. You don’t often see promises like that when it comes to internet service, and it sets CenturyLink apart.

Other benefits to its service include unlimited data and a lack of contracts. It also offers a gigabit-speed fiber internet plan in select cities, which is the gold standard for anyone working from home or supporting a house full of gamers and streamers.

We do wish CenturyLink’s DSL internet service came with faster (and more reliable) speeds. But that’s a drawback for DSL internet as a whole and not just CenturyLink.

Pro Heading
Pros
Pro Bullet High-value prices and no cost increases
Pro Bullet Unlimited data
Pro Bullet No contracts
Con Heading
Cons
Con Bullet DSL internet speeds can be hit or miss
Con Bullet Limited availability for fiber plan

AT&T Fiber internet deals

†† See all disclaimers. Data current as of post date.

Is AT&T Fiber internet good?

AT&T Fiber is like alchemy: it mixes affordable prices with fast speeds and unlimited data to create gold. Or in this case, exceptional value. It ranks as one of our top five best internet providers for its limbo-low prices—we rarely see another provider charge anything as low.

On the other end of the spectrum is AT&T’s DSL service. It tends to suffer from slow speeds, a common issue affecting all DSL internet providers thanks to aging infrastructure.

So if you have a choice, we recommend going with AT&T Fiber over its DSL service.

Pro Heading
Pros
Pro Bullet Affordable prices across the board
Pro Bullet Fully fiber connections in select cities
Pro Bullet Unlimited data for fiber plans
Con Heading
Cons
Con Bullet Slow DSL internet speeds
Con Bullet 1 TB data cap for DSL plans

Verizon Fios Home Internet deals

Stream Encanto over and over on Disney+ (and enjoy some Better Call Saul on AMC+). Both services are included for 12 months along with a $50–$200 Verizon gift card for the following internet plans:

  • Internet 200/200: $50 Verizon gift card
  • Internet 400/400: $100 Verizon gift card
  • Fios Gigabit Connection: $200 Verizon gift card

Cash In & Stream with Verizon Fios Home Internet

These offers end January 19, 2022.

Is Verizon Fios Home Internet good?

Verizon’s fiber internet service is available in only the northeast, but if we could get it where we live, we would. We’ve heard great things about its reliability and customer service, and its prices are competitive compared to other providers in the area.

It also comes with no annual contract and what customers have told us is unlimited data. (Though Verizon itself keeps its lips zipped on this topic.)

We can’t point to any major downsides other than the limited availability and the fact that AT&T Fiber internet prices start out cheaper.

Pro Heading
Pros
Pro Bullet Reliably fast fiber internet
Pro Bullet No annual contracts
Pro Bullet Potentially unlimited data
Con Heading
Cons
Con Bullet Limited to the northeastern US
Con Bullet Prices are decent, but not the cheapest

How to find the best internet prices

If you’ve got money on your mind and your mind on your money, here are a few tips to help you find the best internet prices in your area.

1. Compare prices in your area

Did you brush up on your game show skills? Because it’s about to feel a little like The Price is Right in here.

Sure, comparison shopping for internet can feel like a major shot in the dark, just like guessing how much that set of deluxe pots and pans plus gas range sells for. But we’ve got a few tricks you can tuck up your sleeve to make things easier, like our list of the top five cheapest internet providers overall.

And if you tell us your zip code , we can sift through our internet plan data to find out which ISPs offer plans in your area. That narrows things down a bit, eh?

Anyway, you might be able to find a better internet connection with a faster speed.

2. But don’t just rely on price

If you’re a heavy internet user and love to stream Disney+ in 4K or hop online for a PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds match, you don’t want to just grab the cheapest plan out there.

Take a look at our download speed guide to find out how much speed you need to keep yourself connected. Then check out the five fastest ISPs and see if any of your local providers made the list. Chances are if they’re mentioned, they’ll deliver blazing-fast  download speeds directly to your modem.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask

If you can’t order online or don’t see one of these offers show up when you’re checking out, we still think it’s worth calling and asking the internet provider to cut you a deal.

Just make sure you’ve got all the info about the promotion you want applied. And hey, a little kindness never hurts either.
