Breakdown of the best AT&T plans
Best 4-line offer | $30.99/mo.
- High-speed data: Unlimited
- 5G access: Yes
- Hotspot data: None
- Talk and text: Unlimited
The one-line price for the AT&T Value Plus VL plan looks hefty, but the moment you add four lines, you bring the price down to $30.99 per line. Amazingly, this is actually the cheapest you can get an AT&T wireless line per month, and it’s worth it. You get everything you need including unlimited data (can be slowed down if the network is busy), international perks, and AT&T’s free ActiveArmor security app. For someone who’s interested in the basics and direct access to AT&T’s premium network with some extra perks, this plan is for you.
Best prepaid plan | $65.00/mo.
- High-speed data: No slowdowns
- 5G access: Yes
- Hotspot data: 35GB
- Talk and text: Unlimited
You don’t need a postpaid AT&T plan to get access to some incredibly awesome perks. While the Unlimited MAX Plus plan is the most expensive of AT&T’s six prepaid plans, its features are hard to beat. It offers high-speed data that doesn’t slow down no matter how much you use, 35GB of hotspot data, unlimited texts to 230 areas, 100GB of AT&T personal cloud storage, and unlimited talk, text, and data between Mexico and Canada.
It also offers a feature called AT&T Level Up that allows new single-line customers to move to postpaid plans (regardless of credit score) and access the best devices after on-time payments for six months.
Best perks | $85.99/mo.
- High-speed data: Unlimited, no slowdowns
- 5G access: Yes
- Hotspot data: 60GB
- Talk and text: Unlimited
The most expensive AT&T plan is aptly named its Unlimited Premium PL. It includes the most generous amount of hotspot data at 60GB per line per month. And unlike all AT&T’s other unlimited plans, its data speeds don’t slow down based on how much you use. Plus, its international benefits are robust for those who prioritize this kind of feature.
It is the only plan that includes something called the AT&T Signature Program that saves you $10 per month ($120 per year, per line) when you get up to five lines. This discount applies to eligible business employees, people 55+, military and veterans, first responders, teachers, nurses and physicians, unions, and students.
AT&T family plans
Like Verizon (and unlike T-Mobile), you can mix and match AT&T’s family plans so that each member on the main plan can have a different individual plan.
Here is an example of a mix and match four-line plan. Two of the lines include the Unlimited Premium plan, and the other two include the Unlimited Starter plan. See below:
Total of four lines: $173.96/mo.
AT&T prepaid plans
Its six plans range from $20 to $65, and each one offers unique perks such as different hotspot data allotments, rollover data features, and even something called AT&T Level Up that allows new customers to become postpaid customers with access to the latest devices after six months of on-time payments (regardless of credit score). AT&T prepaid plans are perfect for customers who want more flexible month-to-month commitments and would like to snag an overall cheaper AT&T plan.
Here is a current online deal that can save you a lot over a year—you can pay for one year of an AT&T prepaid unlimited plan for $20 per month. It includes 10GB of hotspot data. The only requirements are that you prepay $240 for 12 months of service, purchase a phone or SIM, and activate a new single line. Be aware that after 16GB, your data slows (but that’s OK because most people use 10GB or less per month).
More AT&T plans
$35.00/mo. per line, with two lines
Anybody who is 55 years old or over can get an exclusive unlimited plan with 60GB of hotspot data for $35 per month per line (with two lines). This price includes a $10 autopay and paperless billing monthly discount, and you can still access the AT&T Signature Program’s $10 per month discount if you’re a qualified employee, student, or authorized individual. But don’t try to cheat the system because if you don’t verify your age, AT&T tacks on an extra $20 per month.
How much phone data do I actually need?
We recommend getting at least 10GB
AT&T’s Unlimited Premium plan is perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to run out of data. You get unlimited high-speed data that won’t slow down based on how much you use. And you also get a gigantic 60GB of hotspot data per line per month. Data hogs will be in data heaven.
On the other side of the spectrum, if you are always connected to Wi-Fi, the 4GB plan is probably just perfect, and it still comes with a mobile hotspot.
Here’s how to get the best AT&T plan deals
Use the following tips to get the best deal for your AT&T plan:
It bears repeating that with each line you add to your AT&T plan, the cheaper your individual line becomes. You could pay as low as $25 per month for four lines.
You don’t have to sign up for the most premium plan with the biggest hotspot data to have a good cell phone plan. While we recommend 10GB minimum, if you’re constantly connected to Wi-Fi, you probably use even less per month.
Lifeline is a federal program for low-income households that could lower the monthly cost of your wireless bill. Applying is free, and anyone participating in a federal aid program could qualify.
