In 2020, CenturyLink rebranded itself and became Lumen Technologies, which led to rebranding its fiber-to-the-home business as Quantum Fiber. To expand its fiber offerings, it uses XGS-PON technology to increase bandwidth without modifying existing fiber in the ground, providing speeds up to 8,000Mbps.
Since 2022, Quantum Fiber has announced its large fiber expansion to 20 communities in 12 states, including Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. This included a 25,000 mile route in Colorado, 19,000 miles in Washington, and 9,000 miles in Iowa. In 2022, Lumen also announced it would bring speeds up to 8,000Mbps to cities near Denver, Minneapolis, and Seattle.
Based on the Lumen 2023 Investor Day Presentation, Lumen aimed to add 125,000 total fiber subscribers in 2023, 225,000 in 2024, and reach 450,000 in 2027.
During my time reading, scrolling, and digging through Quantum Fiber’s expansion news, I noticed an absence of expansion news in 2024. What happened to the Lumen in 2023 with its enthusiastic goals to expand in multiple cities? AT&T happened.
In May 2025, AT&T announced plans to acquire 95% of Lumen’s Mass Markets fiber internet (about 1 million fiber customers and 4 million fiber locations across 11 states). It hopes to close this deal at the beginning of 2026.
This acquisition means that Quantum Fiber subscribers will eventually transition to AT&T Fiber customers. Pending regulatory approval, this move will help AT&T extend its fiber coverage to about 60 million total fiber locations by the end of 2030 (about double of what it has in 2025).
