What to look for in a Vivint-compatible device

Vivint is directly compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant devices. So if you’ve picked up an Amazon Echo, a Google Home, or a Nest Hub, it’s probably a safe bet that it’ll work with your Vivint security system.

Vivint also works with the Z-Wave smart home protocol. Theoretically, any Z-Wave device should work well with Vivint, but customer commentary shows that may not always be the case. When you get a Z-Wave device to merge with your Vivint system, set it up and try it out before throwing the packaging away. That way, you can still make a return if you need to.

Compatible device features:

  • Work directly with Vivint
  • Don’t require separate paid subscriptions to use
  • Can be installed by either you or a paid professional

We suspect that most Vivint users opt to get smart home devices directly from Vivint. After all, if you’re paying that much for a security system and smart home setup, you might as well go the full nine yards.

But for anyone who wants to augment their Vivint smart home, we’ve selected some of the top Vivint-compatible devices. Just know that you may have to pay for the $39.99 Vivint Smart Home plan to fully integrate your third-party products.

Vivint smart home products
Light Bulb

This review excludes any Vivint proprietary devices, like the Vivint Indoor Camera, the Vivint Outdoor Camera, the Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro, the Vivint Smart Thermostat, and Vivint Car Guard. In some instances, the Vivint-branded devices may work better with a Vivint system than our third-party recommendations.

Amazon Echo: Best smart speaker

Echo Dot, Sandstone, Front On
pro Voice control
pro Tons of device options
Starts at $17.99

You can access your lights, thermostats, locks, security system, and cameras through the Vivint Smart Panel, but if you want voice control, you have to add a smart speaker. Enter the Amazon Echo.

You can use voice commands to control your Vivint security system and smart home setup with your Amazon Echo. You can also set your home alarm, bring up camera feeds on your smart hub, turn your Vivint Smart Thermostat up or down— and more with the Echo. If your hands are full while you're cooking or cleaning, it makes things super convenient. And don’t even get us started on the thrill of turning off the lights from bed!

Echos don’t require Amazon Prime or other Amazon premium subscriptions, although to use one to the fullest, you’ll need an Amazon account. And though they can’t use Google or YouTube, overall, we found in previous tests that Echos are a little easier to use than Google Homes and Nest Hubs.

Our favorite Echo is the Echo Dot. It’s not too pricey, it’s frequently on sale, it’s compact, it’s cute, and it performs all basic Echo functions. But if you want something with better sound or with a screen, we’ve compared some of the standard Echo devices to help you differentiate.

If you don’t see something you like in our table, there are tons of other Echo devices. You can even buy an older, refurbished device if you want something that’s no longer made.

Using Vivint through Alexa
Pin

We spent forever asking Vivint to do things through Alexa, like arm itself or show us camera feeds. Alexa kept saying it couldn't do that until, finally, we realized that we needed two skills to make Vivint fully work.

The Complete Vivint skill requires you to say, "Ask Vivint to …" The Basic Vivint skill doesn't require such specific wording, but it works only with Vivint's smart home devices and cameras, not the security system itself.

Nest Learning Thermostat: Best smart thermostat

nest- thermostat
pro Geofencing
pro Multiple settings
Starts at $212.59

A smart thermostat is a fantastic smart home resource. And Vivint Smart Home just happens to be compatible with one of the leading thermostats on the market, the Nest Learning Thermostat.

The thermostat works with Alexa, offers geofencing (which means it can change its settings when your smartphone is at home vs. away), comes in multiple colors, and has more modes and settings than you can shake a stick at.

Best of all for Vivint users, you can adjust the temperature straight from your Vivint app instead of hopping over to the Google Home app. You can also use the smart panel to access the thermostat alongside other Vivint-compatible devices.

To use your Nest Learning Thermostat with Vivint, you’ll visit the Works with Vivint screen and authorize Google Nest. Then you’ll log into your Google account to allow Vivint permission to access the thermostat.

Yale Assure Lock Touchscreen: Best smart lock

Yale Assure Lock Touchscreen
pro Unique access codes
pro Locks behind you
Starts at $267.95

None of the locks from our topmost recommendations are compatible with Vivint that we know of. Instead, we’re branching out to recommend the Yale Assure Touchscreen smart lock as our top standalone pick.

This lock has tons of features to make your life a little more convenient. It’ll use geofencing to unlock the door when you approach with your smartphone. If your phone isn’t at hand, you can use the keypad or your key. You can create unique access codes for any visitors or guests, and if you enable the Auto-Relock feature, the lock will even lock itself behind you.

Once you’re all synced with Vivint, you can also lock and unlock your door through the Vivint app and (once again!) the smart panel. No Yale app necessary.

The Yale Assure Lock Touchscreen requires a Wi-Fi hub to work, which is a minor hassle, but not a major inconvenience. But we couldn’t find authoritative instructions on the best way to connect this particular lock to your Vivint system. Our suggestion is to give Vivint customer service a call.

Vivint locks
Money

Vivint sells several different locks with its packages. To our understanding, the lineup mainly consists of Kwikset products. We love us a good Kwikset lock, but there’s something to be said pricewise for buying your own separate lock and installing it yourself.

Philips Hue Colored Smartbulb: Best smartbulb

Four Philips Hue lightbulbs and Philips Hue bridge
pro Routines
pro Geofencing
Starts at $199.99

At this time, only Philips Hue bulbs are compatible with Vivint smart home. Philips Hue bulbs are quite pricey, which is a shame, but they’re also considered one of the best bulb brands out there.

With Philips Hue, you can create light routines for your day, such as a gradual lightening in the morning or shutting off all the lights at midnight. The bulbs also have a geofencing feature you can use to create different settings for when you’re home and away.

If you’re going to shell out top dollar on these bulbs, we recommend going for the colored ones. Customizing colors to create the perfect mood is half the fun of having smart lights. However, you won’t be able to do any of that from the Vivint app or smart panel.

Through Vivint’s app and hub, you’ll only be able to turn the lights on and off. The rest of the magic happens with your Philips Hue app. So if you feel like the colors aren’t worth it without Vivint control, you can also get a more affordable white light kit.

The kit we recommend comes with three A19 bulbs and a Hue hub (which is required for the bulbs to function correctly). Once you’ve set up the Hue hub, Vivint suggests giving the security company’s technicians a call for guidance in connecting Hue to your Vivint smart panel.

Chamberlain MyQ: Best extra

Chamberlain MyQ garage door opener
pro Remote access
pro Amazon Key enabled
Starts at $89.99

If you’re looking for a super-useful smart home device that’s a little outside of the norm but works with Vivint, we suggest trying the Chamberlain MyQ.

This smart garage door sensor tells you when your garage door opens or closes. It also allows you to lift and lower the door remotely for package delivery people, in-laws, babysitters, kids, housekeepers, and significant others. You can perform these functions both in the MyQ app and in the Vivint app and smart panel, and you’ll get notifications when someone else uses them too.

Our favorite feature, though, is Amazon Key. If you’re an Amazon user, the Chamberlain MyQ will allow you to use the Amazon Key feature, aka have packages delivered directly inside your garage. It sounds a little risky, we know, but to protect your home from unwanted visitors, the delivery person gets only a one-time code to access the garage door through MyQ.

The only reason we haven’t rated MyQ higher is that over a five-month test period, it’s occasionally gone on the fritz and lifted the garage door on its own. There’s an apparent fix for that, but it’s time-consuming, so in the meantime, we’ve learned to keep the garage door safety latches on at night.

According to the MyQ website, if you don’t purchase the Chamberlain MyQ device directly from Vivint, you may need to switch over to a MyQ brand opener to make the system compatible.

Recap: Best Vivint-compatible smart home devices

  • Amazon Echo will open doors (figuratively and possibly even literally) by giving you voice control over your entire Vivint Smart Home system.
  • Nest Learning Thermostat lets you adjust your home temperature straight from the Vivint app.
  • Yale Assure Lock Touchscreen makes it easy for you to lock and unlock your door while performing other Vivint functions.
  • Philips Hue Colored Smartbulb allows you to turn the lights on and off in your Vivint Smart Home.
  • Chamberlain MyQ gives you the power to raise and lower your garage door through Vivint (and get notifications when it opens and closes).

All of these products will help complete an already-existing or soon-to-be Vivint security system/smart home setup.

If you’re overwhelmed by the time it takes to set up and install these products, we suggest just buying your smart home devices straight from Vivint. It might be more expensive in the end, but it will definitely make things easier!

Methodology

We chose the best products for this review based on a few factors:

  1. Compatibility with Vivint
  2. Device accessibility
  3. Device features
  4. Price
  5. Our familiarity with the brands
  6. Our experience with the brands
  7. Other professional reviews

As we spend more time with Vivint and test even more Vivint-compatible smart home products, our opinions may change.

Vivint-compatible FAQ

To our understanding, the only Vivint-compatible security cameras are Vivint’s cameras.

Vivint sells an indoor camera, an outdoor camera, and a video doorbell camera. To fully use the devices, you have to get Vivint’s top-tier plan, which includes video recording.

According to other reviews on the web, Vivint also works with the Nest Thermostat E.

We’ve also heard that there’s a Nest Learning Thermostat Pro that you can get only through a professional installer like Vivint. We aren’t yet sure how the Pro differs from a regular Nest thermostat (since we haven’t been able to get our hands on one).

When you get Vivint Smart Home security, you can expect to get some or all of the following:

  • Control panel
  • Motion sensor
  • Door sensor
  • Window sensor
  • Water sensor
  • Glass break sensor
  • Smoke detector
  • Carbon monoxide detector
  • Door lock
  • Security camera
  • Video doorbell
  • Light module
  • Garage door opener

And that’s not even a complete list.
