Do a quick Google search, and you’ll find plenty of articles suggesting that you use a VPN (virtual private network) to bypass country restrictions. However, watching Netflix from a country where you’re not physically located is more complicated than it sounds. Even though it’s perfectly legal to use a VPN in the United States, Netflix has its own terms of use policies and content that follows every country’s specific regulations.

While it’s possible to watch Canadian Netflix in the US or UK, it’s not something we recommend doing. Here’s information on whether or not you can watch Netflix from another country in the first place, what most people end up doing, along with what Netflix recommends.

Can I watch Netflix from a country I’m not physically located in?

It is possible to watch Netflix from a country you’re not physically located in, but we do not recommend it. Netflix terms of service discourages anyone from streaming movies from another country. Since each country has different video restrictions, the selection of movies and videos varies by region. The selection of shows isn’t the only difference. Depending on the country, subtitles vary along with movie ratings.

Even though Netflix doesn’t encourage you to access video content from another country, you are still allowed to use a VPN in the US and UK. VPNs work by connecting you to a server in another location in order to protect your privacy and secure your data. Many people end up using a VPN in order to access content from another country.

What does the Netflix help center have to say?

The Netflix help center is slightly vague when it talks about accessing content from another country. There’s information about what to do when relocating both within and outside your country, but not a lot about accessing videos from another country.

Keep in mind that Netflix will look different when you’re traveling. If you go to another country, the selection of movies will look different. Netflix informs users of these differences on their website. According to the help center, even if you download certain movies, you might not be able to watch them while in another country.

If you’re traveling to another country and want to check if your show is available, you can find Netflix regional look-up tools online. Other than that, there’s really no way to know until you get there. Fortunately, Netflix is available in over 190 countries and has a large range of videos to watch. So even if you do travel for vacation, there’s still plenty of good movie options.

What can happen if I use a VPN to access another country’s Netflix?

If you try accessing Netflix using a VPN, there’s a chance your account will be blocked. Netflix tries to detect VPNs because they don’t want you streaming movie content from other countries. This is because copyright owners don’t get paid for their videos when you stream from an unlicensed country.

It’s important to always respect the terms of service of Netflix and the VPN you’re using. Never use a VPN to participate in illegal activity. Just don’t use one to stream videos you don’t have access to. It’s like making copies of a CD instead of purchasing it.

Here’s why things get slightly more complicated: in the US and UK, it’s perfectly legal to use a VPN for privacy reasons. Therefore, you can also use a VPN while watching Netflix as long as your server location is in the same country as your physical one. That way you can be sure you won’t violate any copyright laws.

If you want to use a VPN to protect your privacy, and keep it turned on while streaming Netflix, you need to use a VPN that works with Netflix. There are lots of VPN options on the market, but not all of them work well for streaming movies.

For watching videos, you’ll need a VPN that won’t slow your internet speed too much. If Netflix blocks the VPN you’re using, there’s a good chance it isn’t the most reliable VPN. We’ve researched and reviewed many VPNs and compiled all of the information into a handy guide to the best VPN services out there.

Here’s a quick recap: you shouldn’t stream Netflix movies or TV shows from another country due to the sensitivity of copyright laws. However, you can use a VPN while watching Netflix to protect your privacy.
