How to Watch the 2022 Oscars
The Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles, but how can you watch it from the comfort of your home?
When are the 2022 Oscars?
The 2022 Oscars will air on Sunday, March 27, at 8 p.m. (ET). Prepare to laugh while watching hosts Regina Hall, Wanda Sykes (especially Wanda Sykes), and Amy Schumer present the nominees.
The 94th Academy Awards will air on your local ABC station, so you’re going to need to know how to watch the Best Actor and Best Picture announced in real-time.
Watch the ABC channel with the ABC app, fuboTV, YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and DIRECTV STREAM. Using an HD antenna to get your local channels will be the cheapest option, but if you want many popular channels to enjoy after the awards, any one of these services will be an excellent pick.
Let’s get into the details of each service. Lights. Camera. Action.
How can I watch the 2022 Oscars?
Our top five recommended ways to live stream the Oscars are downloading the ABC app, or subscribing to fuboTV, YouTube TV, Hulu Live, or DIRECTV STREAM.
You’ll have access to the ABC channel and ABC content with the ABC app. If you choose to go the live TV streaming route, you’ll have more than 50 live channels to sift through after the Oscars are over.
Sign up for one ASAP so you don’t miss out on who wins Best Actress. Will it be Jessica Chastain? Or maybe Olivia Colman?
The ABC app is best for watching the Oscars, but not for some
The ABC app is best for watching Hollywood’s biggest night, but only if you’re a cable TV or satellite TV subscriber.
To put it frankly, the ABC App is the most inexpensive way to go (in a way), but it’s best for two types of people:
- Someone who has login information to a current cable TV or satellite TV customer’s account. (If you’re a Millennial like me, you know your parents have a subscription to something like Xfinity.)
- Or maybe you’re that cable TV or satellite TV customer we’re speaking of, but you won’t have access to a television and need to stream the Oscars on your smartphone.
If you don’t fit into either of these categories, we suggest you scroll down just a little to fuboTV.
The ABC App allows you to log in with any of these TV providers:
- Cox TV
- DISH TV
- DIRECTV
- Optimum TV
- Spectrum TV
- Suddenlink TV
- Verizon Fios TV
- Xfinity TV
If streaming doesn’t seem like it would be your thing, you can get the ABC channel with the two satellite TV providers: DISH and DIRECTV.
If you’d rather get cable TV, we recommend the following providers (in order): Xfinity TV, Spectrum TV, Verizon Fios TV, Optimum TV, Cox TV, and Suddenlink TV.
fuboTV has ABC and lots of other channels
fuboTV has the ABC channel (along with 160 other channels), and we know you’re dying to see if Power of the Dog wins all 12 awards it’s nominated for.
fuboTV is our favorite live TV streaming service, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best for you. If you can get behind more than 50 sports channels—including favorites like Disney Channel, HGTV, Food Network, and CNN—then you’ll like fuboTV.
If you just need a good number of lifestyle, kids, sports, and news channels, you might like YouTube TV a little more.
fuboTV is $5–$15 more expensive than YouTube TV, but fuboTV offers 25–75 more channels.
Both of fuboTVs plans offer the following channels:
- BBC America
- Disney Channel
- ESPN, ESPN2
- Food Network
- FOX News
- FOX Sports 1, FS2
- Hallmark Channel
- HGTV
- Lifetime
- MSNBC
- NFL Network
- Nickelodeon
- Paramount Network
- Telemundo
- Univision
- USA
YouTube TV is best for most Oscar-watching families
YouTube TV nets you the ABC channel for this year’s Oscars, major sports channels, and a wide variety of channels for the family.
Watch who wins the 2022 Oscar awards with YouTube TV. Then, why not stream Guy’s Grocery Games on Food Network, Castle on Lifetime, or Law & Order on USA?
YouTube has two great features you won’t find with another service at $65 per month: an endless DVR storage and the three major US sports networks.
YouTube TV gives you unlimited DVR storage that saves your recordings for nine months. So you can record the entire 3-hour Oscar event if you’re busy at work, and you’ll still have plenty of space leftover.
With this live TV streaming service, you’ll be able to watch NFL Network, NBA TV, and MLB Network every single day, if you’d like.
YouTube TV’s channel lineup includes the following:
- Cartoon Network
- The CW
- Disney Channel
- ESPN, ESPN 2
- Food Network
- FS1, FS2
- Hallmark Channel
- HGTV
- MSNBC
- Nickelodeon
- Paramount Network
- PBS Kids
- TBS
- Telemundo
- TNT
- Univision
Hulu + Live TV comes with ABC, Disney+, and ESPN+
Hulu Live has the ABC channel for the Oscars, and this service also includes Disney+ and ESPN+. Enjoy Hulu Originals, Disney+ content, and sports during the commercials of the awards.
Hulu Live not only gives you more than 85 channels, but you also get Hulu’s huge on-demand library, Disney and Pixar movies, and live sporting events.
The channels you’ll get with Hulu Live are the following:
- Big Ten Network
- Cartoon Network
- Discovery Channel
- Disney Channel
- ESPN, ESPN2
- Food Network
- FOX News
- FS1, FS2
- HGTV
- Lifetime
- MSNBC
- NFL Network
- TBS
- Telemundo
- TNT
- USA
Disney’s streaming platform will give you hours of nostalgic and new content that we all love. If you want to entertain your kids or nieces and nephews (and yourself), throw on The Lion King, Frozen, Black Widow, or Encanto.
Stream all NCAA football, NHL, and rugby games with ESPN+. Check this list out to see all 24 sports this sports streaming platform gives you access to. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to stream NBA or NFL games unless they’re specifically airing on ESPN.
Hulu Live has got the overall package for entertainment, but first, we must find out if Encanto wins the Animated Feature award!
DIRECTV STREAM is for those who want a traditional TV experience
DIRECTV STREAM has the ABC channel, but it’ll come at a higher price. You’ll like this streaming service if you’d like a set-top box (or device) that also lets you stream Netflix, HBO Max, and more.
Whenever we mention DIRECTV STREAM, we highlight how it’s the best service for people who’d like a traditional TV feel.
In fact, DIRECTV STREAM is the streamable version of DIRECTV, the satellite TV provider. With that comes the high prices.
At least DIRECTV’s streaming service doesn’t have second-year price hikes, but DIRECTV STREAM is the priciest live TV streaming service of them all.
But don’t let us stop you if you’d like a free HBO Max subscription for three months (when you order CHOICE or above). Or maybe you’d rather have STARZ in your channel lineup with ULTIMATE, or STARZ, SHOWTIME, and CINEMAX channels with PREMIER.
DIRECTV offers the following channels in each of its plans:
- Animal Planet
- BBC America
- Cartoon Network
- CNBC
- Discovery Channel
- Disney Junior
- ESPN, ESPN2
- Food Network
- Freeform
- FX
- Hallmark Channel
- HGTV
- HISTORY
- Lifetime
- MSNBC
- National Geographic
- Univision
- USA
Recap: Which is the best service for the 2022 Oscars?
- The ABC app is the best way to stream the Oscars because it’s free to download, but this app benefits only those who already have a cable or satellite TV subscription. Sign in to the ABC app with your provider, and you’ll be able to watch your local ABC channel.
- fuboTV is the best live TV streaming service, in general, as well as the best for streaming the 2022 Oscars. You’ll get 110–160 channels for $70–$80, which is one of the best dollar-to-channel ratios in the TV industry.
- YouTube TV lets you stream the academy award show along with 85 other channels for $65/month. You can also record the event and more because YouTube TV gives you unlimited DVR storage space.
- Hulu + Live TV’s bundle will be great entertainment after watching the female hosts trio present the Oscar awards. For $70–$76/month, enjoy Hulu Live’s 75+ channels, its on-demand library, Disney content, and ESPN live games.
- DIRECTV STREAM is the best option for those who want to watch the 2022 Oscars on a traditional-like service. DIRECTV STREAM comes with a device that lets you stream with other services, like Netflix. This is great and all until you realize that you’ll have to pay $5/month for it on top of this provider’s $70–$150 monthly price tag. (Just budget accordingly.)
