The Most Popular Christmas Toy in Your State
The state you call home can say a lot about who you are (at least if you believe the stereotypes). People in Wisconsin are way into cheese. Floridians love their abundant sunshine. And over here in Utah, we’re obsessed with skiing, fry sauce, and Stranger Things.
But you know what can tell us more about who we truly are than any of those stereotypes? The toys we love to play with.
So we took the liberty of gathering data on which toys are most popular in each state this holiday season. Is your home more of a Play-Doh or a LEGO state? We’ll let you read the results before we pass them on to Santa.
What we discovered
#1: The most popular toy in the United States is . . .
Hide the fragile china set and put on your protective eyewear: the foam darts are coming. You guessed it, the most popular Christmas toy this season is the Nerf gun.
If you thought we’d left these bright plastic guns behind in the ’90s (along with Starter Jackets, Goosebumps, and VHS tapes), you were wrong. Nerf was cool when your parents were kids and when you were a kid, and it’s still cool today.
Nerf guns are the most popular Christmas toy in 11 states! That’s more than one-fifth of the US! If you live in one of the following states, it’s Nerf or nothing.
- New Mexico
- South Dakota
What do these states have in common, besides their desire to blast foam darts at each other? Well, their first letters are an anagram for “Wow, mini cash!” Other than that, we’re at a loss.
#2: If you’re still playing the Nintendo Wii, it might be time to Switch it up
Kids these days like their gaming systems just like their French fries: to go. And we’re not talking about that clunky old Gameboy you used to catch the original 150 Pokémon. We’re talking about the sleek and powerful Nintendo Switch.
The Switch ranks as the most popular Christmas toy of 2019 in the following states.
- Washington, DC (we know it’s not technically a state, but it’s a state in our hearts)
So if you live out here in the Wild West, then your kid—or your spouse—is probably more interested in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate than Fingerlings (whatever those are, Alaska).
And great news: since the Switch first came out, Nintendo’s improved the battery life considerably. Sometimes it pays to not buy a game system right away!
#3: A $100 doll and some $5 squishy stuff tie for the bronze medal
American Girl Dolls are 18-inch tall collectible toys that teach kids about history. Play-Doh is fun to moosh between your fingers. Needless to say, these toys don’t have much in common. But they are both the favorite toy of four US states.
American Girl Dolls dominate in historically minded New England, taking the top spot in the following states.
- New Hampshire
Meanwhile, folks down South prefer the classic and versatile Play-Doh. (Who needs a fancy American Girl when you can mold your own doll?)
- South Carolina
#4: Honorable mentions
Not every toy has the mass appeal of Nerf guns and Play-Doh. But that doesn’t mean that they’re cast off to the Island of Misfit Toys (yet . . . ). Here’s a look at some of the less-popular, but still adored, toys that are seeing some love in certain states.
Through the magic of Google, we were able to extrapolate this data. More specifically, through Google Trends, we could see the most-searched toys on Google this holiday season. What we google speaks volumes about what we want to buy. Some might say Santa uses the same data to inform his gift-giving.
Remember to do your research
Buying one of these popular toys from your local retailer (or Amazon) is pretty straightforward. But when it comes to bigger-ticket items like new phones, TVs, and cable packages, you want to make sure you’re not wasting your hard-earned cash.
