Best Smart Hubs 2018

Smart homes have gotten popular; they are no longer viewed as luxury items among the rich and famous but as a necessity for all in this technology-defined era. As a result, numerous home automation systems are now entering the nascent market and making their way into the hearts and homes of America.

If you’re considering building your own smart home there are lots of options like Nexia Bridge, SmartThings, and Wink. All three promise to connect all your smart home devices from a simple mobile gizmo; however, they all have their drawbacks and benefits.

Price

Price variation is one noticeable difference among the three. The Nexia Bridge is available for $66.74 but the catch is it comes with a monthly subscription fee of $8.99, while the SmartThings hub is available for a flat rate of $99 and Wink hub for $49.99 without monthly fees.

Setup

It is relatively easy to set up all three systems. Wink hubs can be connected directly to your Wi-Fi network while Nexia and SmartThings need to connect via an Ethernet cable. You do have some flexibility as it relates to positioning the hub inside your home but keep in mind that the Wink hub needs to be a distance away from your router and the Nexia Bridge has to be stationed within 60-100 ft of the device if the user does not have a Schlage home dimmer to extend the range of the signal.

Nexia, Wink, or SmartThings?

They all have their differences and similarities. An interesting thing to note is that all three have an option to expand to automate video surveillance.

The Wink hub and the SmartThings hub outshine the Nexia Bridge when it comes to communicating with numerous third party devices. The Nexia Bridge can only communicate with Z-wave while SmartThings works with Z-Wave and Zigbee. The Wink hub works with Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Z-Wave.

One of our team members owns a SmartThings hub and reports that she doesn’t at all feel limited by just Z-Wave and Zigbee and the two make it possible to connect hundreds of devices. On the other hand Z-Wave products are often more expensive than Zigbee so keep that in mind if you choose the Nexia Bridge. Finally, Wink wins with the inclusion of Bluetooth for the ability to connect but beyond ability to connect there are other factors like the ability to control the device.
