What Are the Requirements to Rent a U-Haul?

If you want to rent a U-Haul truck, you really just need four things:

  1. To be 18 years old or older (if you’re 16, you can rent a trailer, but not a truck)
  2. A driver’s license
  3. A credit or debit card
  4. A phone, tablet, or computer with an internet connection

As long as you have those four things covered, you just need to make a reservation and then go pick up your truck.

Heads up
You can pay for a U-Haul rental with cash, but you’ll still have to show them a credit or debit card with your name on it.

How do I make a U-Haul reservation?

You can make a U-Haul reservation online or over the phone. We recommend the online reservation process, though—it’s super easy.

Just go to U-Haul’s home page and enter where and when you want to pick up and drop off the truck, and U-Haul will give you a slew of vehicle and insurance options to choose from.

Pick the truck you want from the list, select your pickup and drop-off locations, and then go through the prompts to finish reserving your vehicle.

Does U-Haul have roadside assistance?
U-Haul can send you roadside assistance if something happens while you’re on the road. You can request roadside assistance online or through U-Haul’s support phone number. Just keep in mind that roadside assistance will cost extra.

When do I pay?

You pay when you pick up your vehicle, so you don’t have to enter payment info over the web.

Just so you know, U-Haul’s advertised prices don’t include the price-per-mile fee or other taxes and fees, so make sure to check your final total before you hand over your credit card.

Does U-Haul require a deposit?
If you use a credit card, then you don’t have to pay a deposit. If you pay with cash, expect to put down about $100.

Now that you know, here are your next steps.
