Argus 2 vs. Argus 3 Review

Which Reolink Argus camera is better?

Easier Charging

Removable batteries
No spotlight

Better Lighting

Spotlight
Batteries not removable

It’s easy to explain the differences between two things that are total opposites. It’s harder to compare two things that are pretty much the same, like the Reolink Argus 2 and 3.

So how do these near-twins differ? The Argus 2 is easier to charge, while the Argus 3 has a built-in spotlight (and costs more).

This article is about the Reolink Argus security camera lineup, not the Argus II retinal prosthesis/bionic eye. If you’re looking for a camera system, you’re in the right place. But if you’re suffering from conjunctival erosion and need some kind of retinal implants or other medical intervention, this is the wrong article for you.

Argus 2 vs. Argus 3 features

Both Arguses offer useful features.

As the table shows, both these cameras have a lot of pros. Let’s dig a little deeper into what they’re offering.

Argus 2 features

Reolink Argus 2

Reolink did a bang-up job with the Argus 2. For its price, this camera offers a lot. It has all the basics, like two-way audio and motion detection, plus some extras, like the siren and the starlight night vision.

The most standout feature, though, is probably its solar capabilities. When connected to the Reolink Solar Panel, the Argus 2 needs nothing but sun. You don’t have to worry about recharging the batteries, and there’s no electrical lines involved, either.

Argus 3 features

Argus 3 straight on

The Argus 3 has everything the Argus has plus more. And by “more,” we mean a motion-activated spotlight. We tested it out, and we’re big fans. The siren-and-light combo is pretty startling: perfect for scaring off intruders.

Argus 3 con
The Argus 2 battery pack is removable. You don’t have to dismount the entire camera to charge the batteries as you do with the 3. So in that way, the Argus 2 is actually handier than its successor.

Argus 2 vs. Argus 3 pricing

The Argus 3 costs slightly more than the 2.

Because it’s newer and has a spotlight, the Argus 3 costs marginally more than the Argus 2. If you ask us, we think the scaring-off potential of the spotlight is worth the extra cash. But both these cameras are a great deal for what they offer.

The Argus cameras are cheap compared to other models we’ve reviewed.

But wait! There are even more costs.

Neither of these cameras comes with a power source, so you need an adaptor or solar panel. Still, even with the extra spending, the Argus cameras are cheap compared to other models we’ve reviewed.

Argus 2 vs. Argus 3 home automation

Automation is the same for both the 2 and the 3.

These two Reolink Argus cameras work only with Alexa and Google. Those are the top smart home integrations right now, which is nice. But you won’t be able to link your cameras directly to any Z-Wave or Zigbee devices you already have or are eyeing.

For the average user, that shouldn’t be a problem, but if you’re a huge smart home buff, that might come as a blow.

Argus 2 vs. Argus 3 installation

The installation processes for these cameras are similar.

We haven’t tested the Argus 2 installation process yet, but reviewer comments suggest that it’s very similar, if not identical, to the Argus 3’s.

Both these cameras come with two different mount bases plus a strap. So not only can you install your Argus in a traditional location (like a wall or roofline), you can also use the strap to affix it to a tree or pole.

If you use the traditional mount, you need screws. But if you go with the pole strap, tools aren’t necessary. That makes it way easier to install than almost every other outdoor camera we’ve reviewed.

Either way, you’ll need to charge the camera before installation and follow the app’s instructions to get it connected to Wi-Fi.

Recap: Which product is better?

Either of these cameras would work well for most users.

Let’s quickly recap the differences between the Argus 2 and 3.

Features: These cameras have nearly all the same features, except the Argus 2’s batteries are removable and the Argus 3 has a spotlight.

Pricing: The Argus 3 is a little more expensive than the Argus 2, but the power source and storage costs are the same for both cameras.

Home automation: These cameras are both compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

Installation: The installation processes for these cameras are very similar (and super easy).
