Being able to find features and functions in a VPN service can be a lifesaver. Most of the best clients offer a killswitch that disables your Internet connection entirely if the virtual private network (VPN) is not working—it’s not always easy to find, however.

The VPN services we selected offer the best interface, you’ll likely find exactly what you need. For example, the killswitch option in TunnelBear is easy to spot. With ExpressVPN, there’s a big button to click to enable the VPN. And with both TunnelBear and Surfshark, you’ll find themes that make using the apps fun and easy. (TunnelBear uses a bear and Surfshark uses water—they’re a welcome departure from the boring look of other apps.)

A professional look and feel and easy-to-find features make these VPN service providers worth the investment. A good interface in a security app means you will be better protected and safer for all online activity, and that’s a huge bonus.

We also flagged speed as an important factor. Each of these VPN providers are fast and reliable for your online security, so not just a pretty face on a so-so VPN.

1: TunnelBear

The best interface we’ve found for any VPN service.

We really liked TunnelBear in our full review, and not just because the website and app make quirky and funny comments about bears constantly. The truth is, using TunnelBear is fun because it’s so obvious how everything works and what the features do.

For the killswitch, TunnelBear includes a full explanation within the app. Other VPN providers just say killswitch with no explanation. There are bright colors, cartoon bears, a professional look—it’s one of the best VPN interfaces we’ve found.

2: Surfshark

Surfshark has cartoon characters and a clean interface.

Surfshark doesn’t take itself too seriously, at least with its interface. Yet, despite a fun look and feel, Surfshark is a serious VPN for VPN users who know this is serious business. With this VPN service, you can find features related to email security with ease and explore other options quickly. You can enable the secure connection or discover what some of the more advanced functions do without hunting around too much. It means you can trust the connection will protect you from hackers and other hooligans.

3: ExpressVPN

You can install ExpressVPN on several alternative devices.

ExpressVPN doesn’t have the funny cartoon characters of TunnelBear or the shark and water theme of SurfShark, but it is amazingly easy to use. One minor example is the ExpressVPN logo. Someone obviously spent time creating the logo, and it’s reassuring to know the app is just as professionally made and well-done.

Why is logo design relevant? Because a lot of VPN services feel like they were put together by some random dude in his garage. ExpressVPNs entire VPN interface and experience matches the professionalism and attention-to-detail of the logo, which projects a feel of trust. Something you definitely want out of a VPN.

Why is the interface so important?

When the interface for any app is professional, clean, and easy to use, it means you can take advantage of more features and enjoy using the product. Let’s be honest—not every app does this. Some hide features in a confusing array of screens and tabs. Others use a weird font or inconsistent colors. It’s like a video game that is poorly designed, hard to understand—and not that fun.

A VPN is no different. Some of the best clients use a clean interface where features are easy to find. They rely on a consistent color palette and even the fonts and selection boxes all look the same.

Power is not hidden

A good interface helps you find the most powerful features. The best one we’ve found is the killswitch for TunnelBear. What’s a killswitch? TunnelBear goes to great lengths to explain that it’s a way to turn off the Internet completely in the event that the VPN connection fails. (It might be due to the VPN server having issues.) When you can find and understand that feature, it means you are more protected, safer when you visit websites, and more secure.

Behind the interface

All of the interface advantages are somewhat “on the surface” in that it’s the paint job and ornamentas on top of the main software product. You don’t see the computer code or the encryption, but a good, professional interface is a signal of trust, care, and attention that went into creating the VPN software and ultimately, protecting your online travels. The VPN client wasn’t slapped together using a bunch of different fonts, and neither was the actual code that is meant to make sure you can’t be hacked, tracked online, or hounded by ads.

Recap: What’s the best VPN interface?

We recommend TunnelBear for its easy-to-navigate interface and advanced features.

The interface is the first thing you see in a VPN client and a hint about whether it actually works. It’s also a way to ensure you can find and understand all of the best features.

  • TunnelBear: Easiest VPN client for finding advanced features.
  • Surfshark: Email security is a major bonus and easy to find.
  • ExpressVPN: Crisp and clean interface with intuitive features.
